busycoupe Posted June 26, 2014 Report Posted June 26, 2014 The Great Race passed through our town yesterday on their way to New Bern, NC. Several friends and I waited for an hour or more by the side of the road to watch them go by. We didn't know at the time, but they had already finished the timed sections of the course for the day and were just getting to New Bern at their own pace when they passed us. As a result, they were widely spaced out along the road. We saw about half of the contestants go by. The Hemmings car stopped for a brief chat, and since my friend had his '64 Corvair Greenbrier there, a team driving a ;62 Greenbrier stopped to compare notes. Many of the cars were open and it was a 90 degree day, Must have been tough on them. ...Didn't see the Imperial featured in the great race blog, but we did see a General Lee Charger go by. .. No P15's or D24's. 1 Quote
Mark D Posted June 26, 2014 Report Posted June 26, 2014 Nice! Looks like you had great weather for it. Did they take the ferry across the Neuse? If so they passed right by our new house in Minnesott Beach! Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 26, 2014 Report Posted June 26, 2014 your mentioning of the General Lee is timely as I saw a reference to the fact that 300 car were used to film that series..but according to Warner Bros.....they sold only 14 cars I think as documented by provenance that were used to film the scenes...however granted many cars were bought for donor sheet metal/ chassis and drivetrain stuff...but they were never considered as part of the set....I may have to dig out my article on this as covered by a popular Mopar mag of the era...each car was sold to a bidder selected by lottery and each signed that they would restore the car back to its glory.... busycoupe Posted June 26, 2014 Author Report Posted June 26, 2014 Mark, We were standing beside route 17 about 30 mi. north of New Bern. I think that their route took them straight down route 17 from Elizabeth City, no ferries. Tim, Around here you can't go to a cruise night or car show without encountering at least one General Lee replica. I went to a show at the local community college in April and the fellow who played "Cooter" on the Dukes of Hazard was there signing autographs. They had 3 General Lee cars and a replica police car. The car in the Great Race went by at 50 mph, no way to tell if it was 'original' ....but it did have the horn that played Dixie. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 26, 2014 Report Posted June 26, 2014 those horns are sold daily....if I think of it later will climb to the top of my shelves and get down the box of mags and read again the article...was written some 26 years ago or better... http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xdixie+horn&_nkw=dixie+horn&_sacat=0&_from=R40 Quote
