janan5243 Posted June 16, 2014 Report Posted June 16, 2014 How hard is it to do a good rebuild of the carb on a 237. I've had a problem with starting when hot. I hold the petal down & it starts. Assuming carb is flooding engine. Noticed some stains at bottom of carb & manifold. Checked after parking car in garage & gas was running down the carb body to the manifold. Any advice/help appreciated. Car runs good. Maybe a simple float A adjustment??? Quote
greg g Posted June 16, 2014 Report Posted June 16, 2014 (edited) set the float level about 2/32nds lower than factory spec. The factory level doesn't like todays' gas blends. This will prevent the percolating gas from overflowing the float bowl. check your needle and seat valve at the carb inlet to assure it is free of debris and closing completely. Were you out and about over the weekend, my wife passed through Milddleburg and said there wer lots of old vehicles out and about. several on the road between Cobleskill and M burg. janan5243 Posted June 19, 2014 Author Report Posted June 19, 2014 I checked the needle valve & it is clean & free. Where is the measurement for the float taken from? Where does the gas leak from? I ordered A rebuild kit from E-bay. The top gasket looks like it is leaking. I work in my hardware store in Schoharie until 4:00 PM. went to Cobleskill with car to fire departments 150th at Fairgrounds. They had old cars. Forgot they had Technopalooza in Middleburgh. Would have gone there. Cobleskill was dead when we were there, was in between crowds. Heard it was jammed afterward for music & fireworks at fairgrounds. There is a car show on 6/28 at the Schoharie Fairgrounds. The Cobleskill Masonic lodge puts it on. I'll have my car there but I won't be there all the time because of my store. Do you live local? Young Ed Posted June 20, 2014 Report Posted June 20, 2014 You need a straight edge across the top of the float chamber and them measure to the float while holding it up tight against the needle valve. Its important to have that needle valve tight while doing this. Also try not to disturb that when reinstalling the fuel line back on the vehicle. Quote
greg g Posted June 20, 2014 Report Posted June 20, 2014 Ed has the procedure ^^^^. I live south east of Syracuse. Maybe I will take a run down there, on the 28th. Quote
janan5243 Posted June 23, 2014 Author Report Posted June 23, 2014 can you adjust the float level with the carb on the car? I got the carb kit so I can put new gasket on if necessary. When I was checking the needle valve I went in with an angled pick & tried to tweak the needle valve flange on float (very carefully). Still have to hold throttle open after warm but Haven't seen gas running down outside of carb. Also discovered that battery cables were very corroded & loose in replacement battery post clamps. Cleaned & tightened. What a difference in starting crank speed. Quote
