flathead1941 Posted May 27, 2014 Report Posted May 27, 2014 Hi folks, I have a 1941 Desoto, which had been sitting for almost 20 years. To make a long story short, I had to pull the head to free up 2 valves that were stuck open. I have it all back together but im sure I have this wrong, and for the life of me I cant remember how it goes back together. I didnt take pics this time, and it bit me. Im not sure if I have the little bracket in the right spot facing the right direction or if it should on the other stud, or if the spring is attached correctly. Thanks for the help I appreciate it. desoto1939 Posted May 27, 2014 Report Posted May 27, 2014 Juan: The bracket that you have the accelerator spring connected to looks to e the bracket for the Oil Filter Assembly. I willhave to look in my 36 - 42 MAster parts book to see if a can find an pictures. If you have a 37 Service manuals it should also show you how the sprint is attached and where it is attached Rich HArtung Live near valley forge PA Desoto1939@aol.com cell 484-431-8157 Quote

40phil41 Posted May 27, 2014 Report Posted May 27, 2014 This is a difficult area to photograph since the oil filter is in front but here are a couple of pics of my '41 Dodge if it helps. The spring is a replacement. Phil Quote
flathead1941 Posted May 27, 2014 Author Report Posted May 27, 2014 Thanks Phil. What does the other end of the spring connect to? Thank you. Quote
40phil41 Posted May 27, 2014 Report Posted May 27, 2014 Thanks Phil. What does the other end of the spring connect to? Thank you. The other end is exactly as you have it. It's into the small hole in the little bracket attached to the rear oil filter bracket bolt. In my case the little bracket is missing so I just have it hooked onto the oil filter bracket (see photo). 40desoto Posted May 28, 2014 Report Posted May 28, 2014 I have a 40 Desoto and took it apart as well without taking too many pics and Im in the same dilema. my 25in block did not have an oil filter so therefore the rear of the spring did not originally go connected to the oil filter bracket. Im going to search for some pictures Ive researched in the past to nail down where this rear spring hooks to. Quote
flathead1941 Posted May 28, 2014 Author Report Posted May 28, 2014 40Desoto - I searched for hours looking for a pic of this but no luck. Please post if you find any. Thanks. Juan Quote
40phil41 Posted May 28, 2014 Report Posted May 28, 2014 Note that the original configuration did not connect to the oil filter bracket itself. It connected to a small lever that was installed onto the rear stud where the oil filter bracket also attached to (as per flathead1941's first post above). If the engine originally came without an oil filter I don't know if the stud was still there or not.
