janan5243 Posted May 19, 2014 Report Posted May 19, 2014 I am installing a canister type filter to replace the throwaway metal canister on my 49 Desoto 239. I know the direction of flow on the engine. If I'm looking at it correctly, the feed goes to the bottom of canister & return comes from topof canister. replacement canister has a tube running up from bottom that bolt for top screws into. tube is hollow & has hole for oil to flow out & thru filter, I assume. We all know what can happen when we assume. According to seller on e-bay, " canister came off 48 Plymouth."Any advice/ help greatly appreciated. Quote
P15-D24 Posted May 19, 2014 Report Posted May 19, 2014 Inlet and Outlet should be stamped on the filter canister. Look for them as not all filters are the same. Quote
janan5243 Posted May 28, 2014 Author Report Posted May 28, 2014 Well I changed the original style throwaway canister style oil filter for the permanent mount canister with replacement cartridge. Was able to reform original lines to feed & return oil. Am happy I was anal about changing oil. Got some sludge & a chunk of carbon( I think) out of pan. Started engine, two min. later oil starts running out from under cap. Somehow gasket went inside canister, was not doing it's job. Opened it up & made sure gasket stayed in place. Still slight leak. Tightened cover a little more. No leak. Took short ride to friend's house to return a tool, slight seepage from cover bolt & gasket. Snugged it up a little more. seems to have stopped. I'm going to replace copper washer under bolt & try gluing gasket in place. Gasket fits cover perfectly. may look for different gasket. Any advice? Quote
Young Ed Posted May 30, 2014 Report Posted May 30, 2014 The gaskets are a little tricky but they do seal once you get them as you have. I'd leave it until the next change and then to the new washer. Just monitor it for a bit but I think you'll be ok Quote
janan5243 Posted June 3, 2014 Author Report Posted June 3, 2014 took the car out Sunday. Before I started it,I checked the cover bolt. I had tightened it pretty good after my first problem. I got 1, maybe 2 turns on it. I guess when it cooled down it got loose. Kept an eye on it rest of day & no leaks or seeping. I will wait for next filter change. Thanks for input. Next project is carb. when it's hot seems to be flooding. Almost didn't start twice. Battery seems to be in good shape for normal starts but it starts to weaken if it doesn't start right up. See a lot of people use the Optima. Any pro's & con's . Quote
st63 Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 I used to use a standard 6 volt battery with about 600 cca, but switched to the optima with 800 cca in my 41 Plymouth P-12 Coupe. Much easier starting, and no maintenance issues. It fits differently in the battery tray, but that's easy enough to address, just rig up a different way to holding it down. I've used Optima's in other vintage cars and trucks with no issues. If you want a stock look, you can find vintage looking empty battery cases that are designed to hide the optima battery...just make sure it's properly vented, as it could be a problem if the optima is sealed up tightly inside a case. By the way, I tried to switch to the cartridge style oil cannister in my coupe, but found that the accelerator return spring linkage only fit on the old throw away type bracket, not the cartridge style bracket. DId your DeSoto have that issue? If so, how did you address it? Quote
janan5243 Posted June 18, 2014 Author Report Posted June 18, 2014 My return spring didn't attach to the filter so I didn't have that problem. Can't you make some kind of bracket to attach it to? Thanks for input on Optima. Quote
