sbright66 Posted May 11, 2014 Report Posted May 11, 2014 I finally cleaned all the dirt off the engine in my 38 Plymouth, but the number on the engine is S40452KAN and the numbers under the dist are 9 2 48. Is this right? Thanks Steve Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 11, 2014 Report Posted May 11, 2014 (edited) looks like it is a replacement engine..the number though may be possibly a rebuilder's ID did you look along the block near the oil pan for a rebuilders data tag..could be either side of the block.. sbright66 Posted May 11, 2014 Author Report Posted May 11, 2014 (edited) The casting # on the block is 1119729-25 and the # on the head is 1120803-8. which should be a 218 correct? No builders tag Edited May 11, 2014 by sbright66 Quote
greg g Posted May 11, 2014 Report Posted May 11, 2014 Well an s code engine should relate to desoto. But there is no s 4 or S40 relatedto the factory codes. Was your car ever registered or titled in kansas? If so then the s 40 and then ending in kan could be a dmv issued number for a swaped engine meaning desoto 40 and kan as the state. How long is the cylinder head on your engine? Engine swaps were a pretty common repair practice in theday and alot if dmv issued numbers to the transplant with a proper notation amending the documents. Quote
sbright66 Posted May 11, 2014 Author Report Posted May 11, 2014 Greg, I don't know, guess I need to do some research. Thanks Steve Quote
greg g Posted May 12, 2014 Report Posted May 12, 2014 The numbers cast on the blocks while having some meaning are not reliable for car dating purposes as depending on business the may have spent a year or two, sitting outside the assembly plants till neaded. Quote
B-Watson Posted May 12, 2014 Report Posted May 12, 2014 The casting # on the block is 1119729-25 and the # on the head is 1120803-8. which should be a 218 correct? No builders tag The casting date of 9-2-48 would make it a 1948 engine. Have no flathead casting numbers but the numbers you found would make it from the late 1940's. If the engine was originally from a Plymouth it would be 217.8 cid while a Dodge engine would be 230.2 cid. Either engine would fit into your car. Bill Toronto, ON Quote
sbright66 Posted May 30, 2014 Author Report Posted May 30, 2014 Well, after some research the car did originate in Kansas so I think the transplant theory is correct. In the mean time I picked up a 230 from a 1950 Dodge Wayfarer for a $100 to build this winter. The guy also has the rest of the car if anyone needs parts let me know. Thanks for all the help.
