sorry it has been awhile but things are going kind of slow right now. hemi is coming along nicely. did have to do some firewall work but that also is falling in place. I have decided to go with a m20 muncy for the tranny and was able to pick one up at carsile a couple weeks ago.

could have put in a late mode LA engine and have some real HP at a big big saving..but it is what he wants I am sure...

I did not mention earlier but I figured a firewall massage was in your future...glad it is coming together

yea I could have hopped up the flathead, and I'm sure it seams like a lot of extra work and expense putting the hemi in there, but I wanted to build something different, and since I have the time and enjoy doing the project, why not?

Like you I do a few things others would think unorthodox..but if you not going to be happy with your car..why have it to begin with...by the way..I did notice the forward distributor hole..that is a big big plus...lol

hello all, well I started my 331 hemi transplant into my 51 coupe this winter. car needed some attention so I tore her down to shell and frame over the past 5 months, decided a motor swap was something I have wanted to do for quite some time and finally decided on putting in a 331 hemi I picked up. got a LONG way to go but have done a lot of homework on this and decided to go for it. seems almost all the people I spoke to about it were singing the praises of doing a small block chebby, but I just don't want to be like 99% of what I see at the shows and really don't want anything but a mopar powerplant.   I figured why not go for it and stay old school with the 331 hemi.    I will try to keep updating my progress as it goes. If anyone has any good input, I'm all ears.

If you absolutely have to have a hemi,a 241 Dodge or a 291,330,341,345 DeSoto are the way to go. The outside dimensions are a lot smaller than those of the Chrysler, and they are also a lot lighter. The 291 DeSoto is slightly lighter than the SBC,and the 241 Dodge is lighter than the DeSoto.

The Dodge also has those ultra-cool "Red Ram" valve covers, and the DeSoto has that "What the hell is a DeSoto?" charm going for it.

Yikes! I forgot all about the 325 Dodge hemi's.

Have you ever saw the mag. streetrodder- they did a build article on a 50 ply. bus. cpe. gasser. first article was in 2009.

A search for- 1950 plymouth gasser brought up several, one of them was that article. there are 3 + articles done over time.

Worth a look.

They used a fatman stub but after while it was worse than  homemade parts- My opinon but after 2nd or 3rd article install of rad. and flip front sheet metal setup seems best to build your own. check it out.

Oh ya, they were using a hemi motor!

IIRC,what Street Rodder was doing was trying to re-create one of the original "Ram Chargers" drag race teams drag cars. Back in a time when everybody was running stuff like Anglia's,Fairlanes, etc, etc, etc, these guys were putting race hemi's in a 50 Plymouth business coupe and scaring the hell out of everybody in sight.

They later went on to building and running the altered wheelbase new Dodge Polara drag cars, which I believe led to the creation of the Funny Car classes.
