mrwrstory Posted February 27, 2015 Author Report Posted February 27, 2015 What type/brand of die did you use for the holes? Oh yeah, looking good! http://www.mittlerbros.com/mittler-bros/dimple-dies/dimple-dies.html - - Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 27, 2015 Report Posted February 27, 2015 Nice tool. Appears to reduce weight and add strength at the same time. Quote
40plyrod Posted February 27, 2015 Report Posted February 27, 2015 So with 3 dies...does cut the hole at the same time as it rolls the edge? Or put 2 together, cut the hole, switch one out and then roll the edge? Quote
mrwrstory Posted February 27, 2015 Author Report Posted February 27, 2015 So with 3 dies...does cut the hole at the same time as it rolls the edge? Or put 2 together, cut the hole, switch one out and then roll the edge? It was not necessary but I pre-drilled the big hole in order to establish the location and save the cutting edge on my friend's tool. The three dies together in normal use, punch and form the hole in one operation. Quote
mrwrstory Posted February 27, 2015 Author Report Posted February 27, 2015 Finally got all the parts fabbed and pre-assembled per the original sketch. Now a little file to fit and paint before installation. I feel like I'm 90% "there" but you know what they say about the last 10%. - - Quote
mrwrstory Posted March 3, 2015 Author Report Posted March 3, 2015 On to the next "stepping stone" to get across the river. I see the "steps" and have started the journey that gets me a unique, homemade, cheap and safe pitman arm. - Quote
mrwrstory Posted March 10, 2015 Author Report Posted March 10, 2015 Progress plods on. I'd never make a living at this unless I could figger how live on a wage of $2.00 an hour. I was a draftsman in the late 50's and re-found that experience in connecting the dots to make this little nacelle to mask the amount that the pitman shaft protruded from the cowl. Today is forecast to be good painting weather so I plan to get all the bare metal components coated. - - - This last pic is out of sequence but shows the overall vision with the pitman arm. 1 Quote
RodFru2u Posted March 10, 2015 Report Posted March 10, 2015 Great looking design Bill, Nice job of welding the cover/shield and blending it in. Can't wait to see it in person. Rod Quote
deathbound Posted March 11, 2015 Report Posted March 11, 2015 Looks like a wrench from a lathe or some other piece of machinery. I thought a spud wrench had a pointed end (I work iron, so use them daily), though, there are plumbing tools called "spud wrenches" also. If I had a pitman arm with the same spline pattern & width of the splines (stock), I might try to cut it down, grind it to the size of the wrench, weld it, & clean it up. Just a thought. I'm sure it will look great, no matter how you work it out. On to the next "stepping stone" to get across the river. I see the "steps" and have started the journey that gets me a unique, homemade, cheap and safe pitman arm. - I doubt you did it this way because of my post, but at least we were thinking along the same lines...........looks great Bill! mrwrstory Posted March 16, 2015 Author Report Posted March 16, 2015 Looks great Bill.....did you see this set-up at the GNRS last month? I didn't get a pic of the steering column/box. Here is a sketch of what I am planning. The aesthetics need to be tuned a bit, which will happen today. Shortly thereafter I will begin my first attempt to beat it into an aluminum part that will be riveted to the body. Quote
40plyrod Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 Looks great Bill, keep going...can't wait for the next installment. Quote
mrwrstory Posted March 23, 2015 Author Report Posted March 23, 2015 Twice now I have written an extensive update and while scanning to "proof", somehow managed to delete. That's when I go to the garage and make some sparks. I do that well! So,......once again (and the second or third time is more of a struggle) I'll try to bring ya'll up to date. A big hurtle for me was reversing the steering box. Never done it before. Turned out to be no big deal. - - Finally got the pitman arm completed and formed into the desired shape. This will yield a 2 1/2 lock to lock ratio as compared to the 3 1/2 turn that I lived with earlier. - - It's all gone together pretty much as planned. Scored a Model A tie-rod over the weekend that gave up its' threaded ends. Ever try to fine a 11/16" left-hand thd die? Clearances are tight but livable. Perfect geometry was illusive as compromises to ratio, clearances, foot room and aesthetics would be required. Turns out, the "Pitman Pocket" illustrated earlier will not be required. I plan to putt around the neighborhood by weeks end to confirm it all works as planned or,..... to provoke the "surprises" that may need to be addressed. - Quote
deathbound Posted March 24, 2015 Report Posted March 24, 2015 VERY nice Bill! Are you going to make it to the L.A. Roadster show with it? Quote
mrwrstory Posted March 24, 2015 Author Report Posted March 24, 2015 VERY nice Bill! Are you going to make it to the L.A. Roadster show with it? Sure hope so! Plan is to putt around the block by this weekend. New tires and freeway miles next week. Boogie to local events and GG Del Mar April 10-12. Then pull the engine and install the Hemi mid April to mid May,...........if all goes according to plan Quote
mrwrstory Posted March 26, 2015 Author Report Posted March 26, 2015 Pretty much on schedule for a drive in the next coupla days. In the meantime, check this image. One of the pleasures for me is the discovery and observation of the subtleties of materials, color and detail of our mechanical infatuations. Quote
fstfish66 Posted March 27, 2015 Report Posted March 27, 2015 you do nice work,,,,, is that a poly in the car now?? Quote
mrwrstory Posted March 27, 2015 Author Report Posted March 27, 2015 ,,,,, is that a poly in the car now?? It's a faux Poly. Underneath the valve covers is a Chebby. The valve covers get a lot of looks and head scratching. Much more attention than a Chev. Everyone with a Deuce Roadster has a 350 in it. Quote
mrwrstory Posted March 30, 2015 Author Report Posted March 30, 2015 Realized a milestone this Sat., cautious drive around the neighborhood with things tacked and temporarily screwed together. No one got hurt. Discovered that the quicker steering was not a perceptible diff. except the input effort was very slightly more. Had to take a second try at getting the steering wheel in a good position which required re-doing the column drop and using a U-joint. I missed perfect by 2 degrees. All in all, I'm very pleased. Now it's on to final welding and assembly, new tires and some freeway miles. After the Good Guys Show in two weeks, the Hemi install begins. - - - Quote
40plyrod Posted March 30, 2015 Report Posted March 30, 2015 Very nice work. Congrats on the drive. Quote
