Sometimes experiences teach you lessons- patience for you?
You have got so far on this project that I'm sure this is Not an issue!
You would have probably burnt it to the ground without loads of patience!!

You're trying to do a better job I think than ma Mopar with an antique.

:D By Jove I do believe I have a functioning petrol gauge :D I will take time to savor this little victory. :D

It is reading about 1/4 and I think I have somewhere between 5 to 8 gallons in the tank. I am going to add 4 to 5 more tomorrow and if it goes above 1/2 I will be one happy camper.

Thanks for all your help. Keven the replacement gauge definitely works....Yeah! And thanks to Brian Neal for the great scan ...... there is some real good stuff in that. This sort of stuff really ought to be in the workshop manual.

Thanks again. Jeff

General Question:

With the ignition on and the engine not running, will the gas gauge show a reading ?

Thanks in advance for looking,

Hank

P.S. Jeff, I'm almost there savor your Victory !

It should. You're applying power to it when the key is on or supposed to anyway.

Thanks. I want to hand hold my fuel sending unit, connect aligator clips neg from the fuel guage and pos ground to assure it is functioning before I mount the sending unit in the tank, install the tank in the truck, fill it with gas and start the engine.

Opinions very welcome. I don't think I want to do this job twice right now.

Thank you very much,

Hank  :)

Hank;

Yes it should read as soon as you turn the key to on.

If you have an ohm meter you should be able to pretest the sender......80/90 empty........40/50 1/2 a tank.......lowest  reading at full.

Without any current added to the circuit, the ohm meter shows an increase and decrease in numbers as the fuel tank sender lever is actuated. But the numbers don't look as clean as 80/90  40/50.  To make it simple it seems they are all over the place, but there is a definate registration. It seems as if the unit is working.  Now that I know the needle should move with the truck in ignition-on mode I'm about to test the fuel sender with a temporary alligator clip setup.

Hope it works,

and thanks for the help,

Hank :)

Sorry for reviving an old thread but i have to add two things it seems no one mentioned.

1. when testing the sending unit under power especially if it is questionable. remove it completely from the vicinity of the tank and wash it thoroughly to remove fuel. Testing it in the immediate vicinity of the tank can cause a spark and burn your beautiful truck up.

2. When testing a gauge with an ohm meter, use alligator clips. Using your fingers to hold them to the terminals will give a false reading through your fingertips that will be all over the place depending on how hard you pinch the connection.
