Over three years ago I considered buying this '78 VW Bus as a project vehicle to finish for my daughter. It was at a moving sale in Oklahoma City. The owner lost his job but found a new one in Florida. The seller wanted $800 but I figured I could have had it for $600 and that didn't seem like a total bargain considering the VW's condition.

BUT, at that time it had the engine and transmission and it ran. It had new brakes. It just needed ... everything ... else.

Now it turns up in Tulsa for $350, minus engine and transmission and I'm betting those brakes, too. And maybe another thing or three.

All that sheet metal damage above and below the windshield -- and the missing windshield itself, in fact -- was due to hail. OKC is essentially the epicenter for hailstorms. The seller had a late-model SUV in a vacant lot across the street that looked like it had been riddled by a gatling gun firing golf balls.

I believe you want to, but think you shouldn't, so you posted it here to vent a hidden frustration. lol

I say buy it.....resolve that issue in your head....and sell it for a 25 dollar profit.

End of VW story. lol

I missed a fantastic Westfalia opportunity about two hours away from me earlier this year. Just couldn't pull the trigger on it immediately and should have.

Only $1,200 for a '73 tin top, a 10-year-old interrupted restoration with a nearly rust-free body and an EMPI crate engine that had never even had the carb appropriately tuned. Wasn't running, but would with a little effort.

Needed an entire interior, new brakes, tires and paint -- someone had tried to replicate a Champagne Edition, badly, on an original orange and white bus -- but just the 95-percent rust-free body was worth a grand I suppose. I got home, thought about it a little while pricing parts including the things I'd want for a custom camping interior, then called back a couple of days later and left a message saying I was coming to pay for it but would have to return on the weekend with a trailer.

I was going to do it up over the span of a year or two and give it to my daughter, like she always wanted. (Except she'd rather have a pop-top.)

The seller's wife called back as I left the driveway to say she'd just been out in the yard with her husband watching the bus leave on somebody else's trailer. ... I'll admit, that one really hurt.
