BobT-47P15 Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 After reading the mention earlier that Boyd Coddington is somehow involved in the "preparation of the 57 Plymouth for presentaton" or some such, I sent an e-mail to a lady with the Centennial Commission, Tulsa office. Don't know if I will receive a reply......but said that I heard he was involved and asked what it was he would be doing. I said, in so many words, that I hoped he was not going to be cleaning or shining it up.....that old car fans from all across the country were coming to her town to see the car just as it comes from the vault.....and that they would be spending a lot of money in Tulsa. I specifically mentioned that one acquaintance is coming from Tenn and another from Idaho....driving our old Plymouths. Said I hope the note did not offend her, but that people are coming from all over to see the Plymouth just as it is. So, right or wrong, I presented my thoughts on the matter. (Of course we all know there is no telling what Mr C will think of to do, and that the folks in Tulsa probably do not know how he is regarded by a certian amount of old car guys.) In reading the publicity stuff some more....I found this: "Boyd Coddington, of American Hotrod, and his crew will join us and attempt to start the car". Well, maybe that's all they will do....we shall see I guess. Quote
eric wissing Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 I hope they don't wipe one bit of dust off of it. Reminds me of the show "Rides" when Jay Leno bought the D1927 Duesenberg and got it going bought showed how the Hollywood version would hvae been, Eric Quote

No primping and preening, just the dusty, musty, rusty facts. What a letdown if they don't let people see the actual first lift out:( Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 Another petty attempt to get publicity for his cookie cutter creations of plastic and billet and un-crated pieces parts...never mind that this was a real car, made of real metal with real people in mind...the show now has more potential for rot than when placed in the ground 50 years ago...for those who ae attending..I surely hope that there is no attemp whatsover to dress or disguise the vehile in any manner...would be a total letdown if they did...people are going to see the real celeb..a 57 Plymouth Quote
Guest tagree01 Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 I hope they don't wipe one bit of dust off of it. Reminds me of the show "Rides" when Jay Leno bought the D1927 Duesenberg and got it going bought showed how the Hollywood version would hvae been, Eric I loved that show. I love seeing people rescue old cars. I really think Leno made a great choice of a sympathetic restoration rather than restoring it to new (or better) condition. Quote
eric wissing Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 Yea, I imagine he paid a fair price for it and it is restored not just another "someday" project. I used to watch "Boyd's show" maybe it was just TV but he seemd like a real jerk. I don't know if they paid overtime to his workers but I wouldn't spend a day with him. I also like my cars to be pretty close to "original" or atleast not altered so much that someone else couldn't undo what I did. To each their own. But when you see some truly rare cars chopped up and they have a sbc dropped in them, it seems a shame. Eric Quote
blueskies Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 Coddinton's involvement in the buried car is surely a dissapointment. Avoid the Boyd, as they say... I've decided after thinking about it though, that I really don't give a damn about Boyd and what he does with the car. I'm more interested in seeing cars and meeting their owners, especially fellas from this forum, when I get to Tulsa. For me, this trip isn't really about the buried car at all, it's about the 3500 mile journey in a 57 year old car with my 8 year old son. It's about the what happens between my driveway and the unveiling of the Belvedere. The buried car is little more than "point B", something to do when we get there. Seeing what is left of the Belvedere is going to be a blip on the radar of the trip. It's not about the destination... Pete Quote
Normspeed Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 Good point Pete. It's a shame Boyd got his tentacles in there though. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, mine is that Boyd is an ass. Hey, maybe he can get to fire a few staffers. He always seems to enjoy cutting off someone's livlihood. Quote

PatS.... Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 The terse response to my polite email sent today asking whether Coddington will be washing or primping the car before the public sees it. From Paula Hale: "We are not washing or primping the car. We will respect its historic integrity." Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 23, 2007 Author Report Posted May 23, 2007 My son-in-law, who lives in Kansas City, wants to go with me. So that's a good thing. He's an old car fan and knows how to work on them....helps me on occasion when they visit. Wife and daughter will be driving another car so they can go shopping while we do car stuff. Yep, the trip's the thing. The good folks in Tulsa will do whatever they think.....whether we agree or not......so we might as well make the most of the occasion for our own enjoyment. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 23, 2007 Author Report Posted May 23, 2007 I will be staying at a Ramada Inn just off I44 and Harvard. Mr Coatney, whom I have met previously, will be staying there also. And, assuming he makes it to town then, Robert VanBuskirk from Indianapolis will be at the same location. Where is everyone else going to be???? As I recall, will arrive Thursday evening and also stay Friday night. Will still be in town on Saturday, but the kids were planning to go on to another city and we were going to stay Sat night with a friend in Tulsa. Quote

Furylee2 Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 I will be driving down Thursday. I have my 58 convertible in the invitational show, so I want everybody to stop by and say Hi! I may not post much, but I keep up with you guys every day. I feel like I already have a LOT more friends through this forum. Lee Quote

I'm more interested in seeing cars and meeting their owners, especially fellas from this forum,Pete Pete; You are correct! However I hate the fact that this has bscome a media $$$$$$ circus. No matter as I will wup you on our first face to face meeting:D For the newbys Pete and I have been heckeling each other for close to 5 years on who has the fastest car. Deep down Pete knows he has the slowest (read looser here) car. The day I first started my engine (long before Pete started his) I called him with the phone close to the exhaust so he could hear what a winner sounds like. I really look forward to ^THE BIG RACE so Pete finally understands that age always wins:cool: And I really look forward to meeting up with all forum members that can make it. Quote
Johnny S Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 Is there a bigger version of the P15-D24 logo available for us to make a one-off tshirt out of? GTK - Help! It would certainly be nice to be able to ID some of the other P15-D24 players. Everyone will recognize Don C....he's ..... he's.........distinguished. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 24, 2007 Author Report Posted May 24, 2007 I did receive a reply from the lady in Tulsa, who said about the same as she said to Pat, that they will protect the historical integrity of the car. No cleaning to be done. She said they have invited students from OSU in Okmulgee, OK to assist Boyd in trying to start the car as the climax of the unveiling. Wonder how many letters she has gotten about that topic..... With a good copy of the logo.....I think you can take it to a quick print shop who can make it into a heat transfer. We have a shop here that will then put it onto a shirt you provide. Cost last time I checked was reasonable. Like $10 or $15, on top of whatever you paid for the shirt. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 It's kind of short notice for you guys to have shirts made up. You could just copy the logo in the upper left corner and save it on your computers. Then buy some heat transfer paper at the office supply store, like Office Max or Office Depot. Then you can print the logo onto the transfer paper and either put it on a shirt or hat with your wifes iron. It's real easy to do. Another thing you can do is what people do at large swap meets when they are looking for something or selling something with out a booth. Make a sign out of card stock, attach a string to it and wear it around your neck. Another thing is for each of you to post a picture of yourself. Then people can print it off and take the pictures with them so you can identify each other. That's why most here can identify Don Coatney. He's posted many pictures of his self and his car. Bob Toft has also posted several pictures of his self over the years. I would also suggest setting up a central meeting place at a certain time for everyone to meet. You could even set up two or three times (or more) to make sure everyone has a chance to get there. In short, make a schedule of some type to make sure you all get together. Someone could even act as a sign up host at the hotel they are staying at. Then when someone arrives in town, they go to your hotel and either contact you there or leave a message as to what hotel they are in. That way the host could call that person at their hotel and tell them where and when everyone is meeting. Just a few suggestions. Quote
David Maxwell Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 ... I created a vector version of the logo and converted it to a larger higher resolution jpeg version which can be seen at this link: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v455/bojeta/Graphics%20Projects/P15D24-for-shirt-web.jpg Quote
blueskies Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 ...no matter as I will wup you on our first face to face meeting:D I ain't skird... Have you got room in your trunk for the mirrors to go with all that smoke??? LOL Your ARCH RACE RIVAL- Pete ps I hope you've gotten your #2 car road ready... and remember to bring proper footwear for the BIG RACE. Quote
Normspeed Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 I too wrote to the folks in Tulsa about Coddington weaseling into the inner circle at this event. I did get a very nice personal reply from Paula Hale. A look at the Tulsarama webpage shows just how far Mr. C has infiltrated the show. "Coddington and his crew are expected to inspect the car after its removal from a vault on Denver Avenue north of Sixth Street at noon June 15 and to help prepare it for an "unveiling" in the Maxwell Convention Center arena at 6:30 p.m. that evening. Two of Coddington's cars will be entered in the Tulsarama! open car show, and he will sign autographs June 16 at the invitational show in the Convention Center. Coddington will award "Boyd's Pick" trophies in each show. " Anyway, here is the very nice reply from Tulsa: "Yes, we have been inundated with sentiments close to yours and also sentiments vastly different. Boyd will not emcee our event nor will he alter the car. You can watch the unveiling streaming live on oklatravelnet.com at noon and then at 7 p.m. on KOTV.com. I wish you and your car could come too. Paula" Quote
FMSPEED49 Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 So if i read that right, nobody is going to see the unearthing, except on the net, then boyd will start the car that has been in the ground for 50 years "without altering it" and I could stand in line to get his autograph, yeee hawww! Quote
