JerseyHarold Posted February 28, 2013 Report Posted February 28, 2013 I want to disassemble a heater control like the one pictured so I can clean it. I tried pulling the knobs off and they don't move. How are they held on? I see a slot in the bottom of the knob, does the knob pry off from there? Quote
58prostreet Posted February 28, 2013 Report Posted February 28, 2013 My '52 Dodge uses a small allen wrench, Don't remember size. Bob Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 28, 2013 Report Posted February 28, 2013 I think the allen wrench thing sounds right........of course, it will be on the bottom side of the knob.......unless you can turn it to the side. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 I think if its a square hole there is a small metal tang in there that needs to be pushed towards the switch. That will release its grip in the shaft and allow you to pull the knob off while holding the tang back. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 (edited) This is my favorite style of heater control for these old car..it is nostalgic in appearance and the fact that the knobs are compatable with the switches of modern AC units due to the shaft size. On mine, the knobs did come off with the use of an Allen wrench..they are held in place by set screws..the set screw is quite deep into the end of the knob.. JerseyHarold Posted March 2, 2013 Author Report Posted March 2, 2013 Thanks for the replies. So far this thing is eating my lunch. I shined a strong flashlight into the slot in the bottom of the knob and there is no allen screw or anything like a spring clip to push on. I turned the knobs to their various detent positions while following the slot with the light and there were no gaps for a poke awl. At this point I'm stumped. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 2, 2013 Report Posted March 2, 2013 probe with an allen wrench..it is a small allen and the screw is deep..at least so in mine... Quote
DCurrent Posted March 3, 2013 Report Posted March 3, 2013 probe with an allen wrench..it is a small allen and the screw is deep..at least so in mine... I agree, If there is a hole at the bottom of the knob, then I would suspect there to be a allen set screw in there. It is possible it is missing. it could be tiny and way up in there. Nothing to loose by sticking a few sizes in the hole. Darren Quote
