Source for Upholstery?

In talking to the guy who'll probably redo the interior of my 53 Plymouth, he says many cars now have companies making replacement upholstery for the seats, doors, etc. He's not familiar with who all makes what, but says if I can locate it rather than him spend hours searching, it'll save me.

What he'd do then is just fit it all.

Even if we can't locate someone making them, we'd still need to locate the correct material for him to start from scratch.

So, my first attempt would be to find pre make panels, seat covering etc.

Anyone know of a place making these things for our cars?

what you want is whats important.

if you want a dead original interior, i couldn't help, but there is a place called ezboyinteriors.com that has a ton of patterns. not sure on our models, but worth a shot.

it would be goo to find a company making panels for the old Plymouths as a bolt in as they say..don't think it's going to happen but I could be wrong...

you wanting the exact matching materials is going to be a trip to the bank as you will have to deal with speciality fabrics supplier like Bonney and such and they tend to be a tad pricy..even through these guys one is not always successful in finding the match..your sources are very limited...

your upholester should be VERY familar with who is out there in supply land and what they carry...this is his lifeblood so to speak....I would suggest another opinion if you have more than one shop in your area..

For any one looking for a sturdy, water-resistant, and flexible material to make door panels to be upholstered, please note that there is corruplast free for the taking in various colours and sizes. You may even have some in your front yard right now. It is not hard to find 3' x 5' pieces and even as large as 4' x 8'. Move quickly as selection and supply will diminish significantly within the next few days.

I spent some time last fall researching fabrics to replace the seating surfaces in my '48. Labarron Bonney here in Mass had some options, but nothing that really came close. But I will say that the team there went out of their way to work with me to find something. I did suggest to them that there is a large 40's mopar crowd that would love to see some kits developed by there team.

I did find something closer at SMS autofabrics. They are located on the west coast and sent me a myriad of samples as well. They even offered complete replacement door panels. Their samples came the closest to the stock I have in my car but the fabric was $85/yard, so I decided to shelve that project and tackle a few others.

Interesting topic. I'll hopefully be ready for interior work next summer. If so will definitely check these out. Interested to see if anyone else has suggestions.

some of the very large long time in business shops may have a large selection of fabrics on their shelves..I know the shop up town has quite the selection and sorted by colors..you may get lucky and snag a fabric suitable to your car and at a better price as they would on the average like to move the stock..most has already been paid for by the prior customer so haggling for a better price is always an option..plus...you get to see what you are getting first hand over trying to imagine the looks of a larger piece from a swatch..

I went by one local owned upholstry shop that's been in business since

1973.....they had a lot of older material in their racks and even in the

rafters. They would sell at some price, surely less than SMS.

The next part of the question is -- if you

find a pattern you like (and they have enough to meet your needs).

You might ask the regular shop what supplier they buy their materials

from. I know of two places in Kansas City - and one of them came

up with a couple types and colors we are going to use.

If you live in a fairly big city, you may have a supply place and just

don't know it. If you talk real nice to them, they will sometimes take

you back among the racks so you can see what's there.

interior, like about all other parts of the car and especially when your goal is to stay stock or stock appearance where possible all comes under the heading "pay to play" I also know a lot of folks here hate that little adage but it rings true at every corner...there is no way that the average thinking fellow could think that these fabrics will be cheap..even the cheap fabrics are not really that cheap unless you luck upon a remnant large enough to do your job..so suck it up and put on your big boy panties and buy what you need...if you on a beer budget, don't ask for the champagne list...
