46 business coupe, 231 engine, I had assumed was factory installed, but just maybe a factory replacement as it has the correct engine number stamped on it. ( matches the one stamped on the rear frame ) At any rate I rebuilt the engine about 10 years ago, reground the crank, new pistons in stock bore, bearings and so on. the motor was installed and then the project stalled while other projects got in the way. Recently the project got road worthy, but I am trying to chase down some vibration issues. Before I tackle the driveline and such I believe the engine may have vibration issues. With the car at a stop the engine idles very smooth, rev to maybe 2000 rpm and the engine developes a bit of a vibration, 3000 rpm and the engine smooths out. Clutch in or clutch out-- same deal. Some would live with it but I don't like it. I believe this is the cause of the excessive vibration at 50 mph while driving the car. Any thoughts, will I need to pull the engine and have it all balanced?

It could be your vibration dampener> This is the lowere pully that has the timing marks. The rubber in this gets hard and then craks and thenthe engine is not smooth. Had this happenon my 39 Desoto. replaced this and it solved the issue.

If this si the case then the rad has to comeout to get down into the lower engine compartment to pull the pulley.

Desoto- could you describe the symtoms you had and how you decided that was what caused it. looks like 200 bucks plus to get one rebuilt.

I had some work done on the car and we replaced the rear upper and lower motor mounts and also had a new clutch and pressure plate put in the car at the same time.

When driving the car a good old time mechanic was in the car with me and he said that the vibration might be coming from the vibration dampener. We also replaced the fron moto mont at the same time.

The vibration was noticeable at low and high speed. Order the VB dampener had it installed and then engine than ran smooth. This was the original unit from when the car was new that we replaced.

Tge rubber was starting to let loose. This is why I sttae the possibility might be the VB dampener. Yes these are now expensive but the VB dampen smooths out the engine. These were onthe bigger Chrysler engines and I know some of the smaller engines might not have one.

You are going to have to look at your engine and also your parts book for your car or truck.

This was all done in 1990 and the engine is stillrunning smooth

Hmmm, I really don't see any noticible wobble or anything wierd on the HB, actually I am not even sure it is a HB and not solid.

If you can reach it with something like an ice pick , give it a poke . if it gives a little like rubber , then you have your answer . My engine from a 1939 Dodge car doesn't have a vibration damper , but I can tell just by looking , as it is only a sheet metal pulley . I think that the rubber is sandwiched between metal so try to poke it on the edge .
