42coupeguy Posted October 18, 2012 Report Posted October 18, 2012 I've been looking for service manuals and finding that there are some 36-42 and some 42-48. Which would be the better year range to buy? Are there any other must have manuals I need to be looking for? Thanks Tim Quote
Niel Hoback Posted October 18, 2012 Report Posted October 18, 2012 42-48 is pretty much all the same car. 36-42 will get you info that is not relevant to your car. Your choice. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 19, 2012 Report Posted October 19, 2012 Along with a repair manual, I would recommend owning a Parts Manual. They contain info not found in the other book. Have part numbers, exploded views of many items and other useful info. Quote
desoto1939 Posted October 19, 2012 Report Posted October 19, 2012 What you are probably sees are Master Parts Manuals. They ususaly cover a 5-6 year range. The dealerships had these in their parts department to help when ordering parts and to also let them know which certain parts from specific years would fit on other years. Example the water pump for the 38 desoto fits the 41 desoto same part number. These are great cross refernece materials for the car owners now. Since you are are 42 owner I would think the 36-42 might be more useful. remember that in 42 there was limited production and then it did not start again until 46. Contact me at my home email I have a lot of cross refernece material and catalogs that might be helpful to your cause and I have these on CD's instead of paper. These manuals covers ignition parts, water pumps, clutches, brakes, brake linings fuel pumps, gaskets, etc. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 19, 2012 Report Posted October 19, 2012 A couple other things of some use are a Motors and a Chilton manual for the year mentioned. They include info on all cars of their era. I mainly use the orange Parts book at the top and the Service book on the right. Quote

They show pictures of the cars and also list the major parts and also part numbers that the shops mostly replaced. This also a good cross reference manual. It also does have sections on how to replace and repair certain mechanical on your car. Rich Hartung Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 19, 2012 Report Posted October 19, 2012 Motors for the repair, Chiltons if you still have an outhouse and read the Motors while there... Quote
jcmiller Posted October 19, 2012 Report Posted October 19, 2012 I have a scanned version of the 1936-42 manual that I can email to you. As Bob-T pointed out, the specific 1942 parts manual is really helpful. A really good internet parts reference for our cars is at: http://chetscoins.com/1948p15/DocumentWeb/ Quote
