speedyshark Posted October 4, 2012 Report Posted October 4, 2012 Well I have a 1948 dodge coupe (d24) that is all original and running good. Everything in the car works except the radio. When I turn on the radio the light comes on and when I turn the dial there is no sound. Can someone tell me how to start looking to see what might be wrong? I want to add a redirad set up and a 6v to 12v convert to run my portable xm radio. Thanks or any help Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted October 9, 2012 Report Posted October 9, 2012 Most likely a bad vibrator. Yours is a typical tube radio. Parts are available. Any old time radio repair man can fix it. There are specialists on the net. Sometimes you can find an old timer locally, or a hobbyist who works on the old sets. Quote

Mark D Posted October 9, 2012 Report Posted October 9, 2012 Agreed - most likely the vibrator tube. When I got my car the radio was dead as well, but I found a replacement 802 for cheap so I went that route. I still have the original on the shelf, and i've been thinking of trying this guy out for a replacement solid state vibrator. mysite.verizon.net/vzevd0f6/CarRadioWebPage.doc Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted October 13, 2012 Report Posted October 13, 2012 Most of the time it is possible to take the vibrator apart, clean the points and get it working again. Or, there are NOS units available. Or, you can make a solid state replacement with a few transistors. Plans are on the net if you look around. Quote
Alshere59 Posted October 14, 2012 Report Posted October 14, 2012 Depending on your your comfort zone this worked on my radio to bring it back to life. Well that and one tube. http://www.antiqueradios.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=127412 http://www.skywaves.ar88.net/commrx/Maintenance/Waking%20Up.doc.pdf Quote
