scottyv47 Posted August 20, 2012 Report Posted August 20, 2012 (edited) not positive but i'm assuming this is what you mean by the torque spiral, sorry about the crudeness of pic i'm terrible at paintshop pro Edited August 20, 2012 by scottyv47 Quote
anthonyb Posted August 20, 2012 Report Posted August 20, 2012 That's the general idea but there should be a very specific sequence listed in your shop manual. My 41 assigns the bolts?nuts a number and then shows the sequence. I believe it starts in the center and works its way around. If you don't have anything like this in your books, let me know and I'll try to scan my book for you. Quote

greg g Posted August 20, 2012 Report Posted August 20, 2012 not quite, It's a center out in alternating X pattern 11 7 2 5 13 10 5 1 4 9 14 6 3 8 12 etc Ive always done mine from the drivers side Quote
scottyv47 Posted August 20, 2012 Author Report Posted August 20, 2012 why does everyone else say to do it in a spiral pattern ? Quote
scottyv47 Posted August 21, 2012 Author Report Posted August 21, 2012 thanks, thats awsome, still though its def not a spiral like i've heard alot of people on this board mention, now if they just get my head gasket in tomorrow i'll be set, the hardest part is waiting, it took me 13 minutes to mark all wires and bolts and remove everything, (gotta love air tools, oh and a good set of ratcheting wrenches is a must), no air puting it back together, dont want to chance over tightening those 61 year old bolts, got threads chased, holes cleaned head checked and cleaned, just waiting on the gasket Quote
scottyv47 Posted August 21, 2012 Author Report Posted August 21, 2012 looking again i guess it qualifies as a spiral if you go area to area and not bolt to bolt Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted August 21, 2012 Report Posted August 21, 2012 It's best to do it by the book regardless of spirals and circles:rolleyes: Quote
scottyv47 Posted August 23, 2012 Author Report Posted August 23, 2012 got my head gasket this afternoon (finaly), put her all back together, torqued 3 times ran her about an hour then torqued again, and checked for leaks and stuff, everything looks good, she's running like a top again, went for a short cruise then put her to bed for the night, woohoo !!!!! Rusty O'Toole Posted August 25, 2012 Report Posted August 25, 2012 Every car maker has their own idea but generally speaking, you start from the middle and work out towards the ends in a spiral pattern. Use the factory sequence if you have it, if you do not know the factory method start from the middle and do the spiral and you should come pretty close. Quote
