rcdean65 Posted June 14, 2012 Report Posted June 14, 2012 Hello, On the original 6 cylinder engine from a 1948 Plymouth P-15, I am having trouble removing the timing chain housing backing plate the top of which also serves as the top bracket for the front engine mount. I believe that I have all of the bolts removed. The hang up seems to be a smallish pin that I would assume is a positioning pin coming into the plate from the engine block side. The plate doesn't want to seem to come off of that smallish pin. Is this smallish pin threaded in from the oil pan side somehow maybe? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Darin Dean Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 14, 2012 Report Posted June 14, 2012 As I recall there are 2 positioning pins (not bolts) to align the plate as seen in these pictures. Quote
Young Ed Posted June 14, 2012 Report Posted June 14, 2012 More than likely its stuck on the gasket rather than the pins. Find as thin of a scraper blade as you can and tap it in there. Keep moving around going further and further until it comes off. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted June 14, 2012 Report Posted June 14, 2012 (edited) You have to remove the oil pan to remove that pin-actually it's the end of a 5/16" threaded bolt that holds the curved aluminum retainer plate that the pan end gasket fits to. Bob Edited June 14, 2012 by Dodgeb4ya Quote

rcdean65 Posted June 15, 2012 Author Report Posted June 15, 2012 Thank you all. That would explain it. I hope I haven't bent the backing plate beyond true in my earlier attempt to figure out what's holding it. The shop manual I have is fairly detailed but it doesn't show that bolt. At least not protruding through into the backing plate. Thanks again. Quote
