Up north in Maine for the weekend, saw a couple interesting vehicles

Spent the weekend at my place in Maine. Finally got the siding on the camp. While roaming around the area I found a couple of jems waiting for the summer to arrive up north.

First one is a '47 Dodge in Jay Maine. $4500 and it's yours. Paint looked new, engine bay was original, cloth interior was yuck but salvageable. I think this one is posted on Craigslist.

Second was a twin to my car sitting in a field in Kingfield, but there was no one around to speak with so no details to offer.

And here's a photo of what I was up to all weekend.

Ferrying the wood down the driveway from the road where it was dropped. Didnt want to risk having to pay for a wrecker to tow out the flatbed.

No electricity or running water -carried up the genset to get the task done. Cleaned up in the river each day. The water was "chilly"...

Mark, we will be in Bath, ME for three weeks: June 13 - July 2. Coffee? Rent your cabin for a day or two?

Our son and his family live in the Dresden area. He has a growing PE practice in Bath. If you are at your cabin when we are there, we'll make a day trip and have coffee.

Thanks for the comments, here's a few more photos from the weekend. I ordered 1,000 board feet of rough sawn shiplap 1"x10" and managed to get almost all of it installed. Since the place is in the wilderness 4 hours from home I didn't want to have lumber lying around until my next trip. So there will be at least a couple more trips this summer.

I think we'll be back up in June at least twice Pflaming, but not sure which weekends yet. I will PM you my cell number and email address, surprisingly I get good blackberry reception up there. Love to have a coffee or a beer and a chat. We often head to the coast from camp when we crave a lobster and steamers, so maybe we'll split the difference and meet you somewhere closer. According to goodle maps, Bath is located about 80 miles due south of Skowhegan Maine and our camp is located about 12 miles west of Skowhegan. So it's a good 90 minute trip with good weather and no traffic.

As for renting the place, it's not quite ready for that yet. Interior has bare minimum finish and accomodations, just enough to be comfortable for me and the wife, (that is when I can convince her to go), others might think its third world accomodations. Like I said no electricity, so I use candles and a small LP stove to cook. There's a woodstove to take the chill away, and some old camp worthy furniture. There's an outhouse out back and a deep river to take care of washing up. Maybe next year I will sink a well, but that's another item further down the honey do list. I've got a wood fired Sauna on my list next!

1st image: the truck delivering the wood. It's got a 6x6 drive line, but the driveway is fairly soft and the threat of a $500 tow job was enough to convince me to break it down in the road.

2nd image: me changing out a tire after finding yet another nail from the old camp in my tire.

3rd image: "Thoroughly board" and as far as the delivery got me before we run out of wood.

4th image: Took a side trip and made a little trek to one of the natural wonders in the area, "grand falls". This is located about 60 miles north of my camp. Here's a link to the location on a map: http://tinyurl.com/84ug53k

5th image: Yep we cooked brats (makara for my finnish friends) on the fire and consumed several bottles of libation (just to keep hydrated of course). :D

Here's a side note of interest. Kingfield Maine (next town over from where our camp is located) was the birthplace of F.E and F.O. Stanley. There exists a mekka for Stanley Steamer owners from around the globe and steamers are often seen arriving there in the summer months.

I also spent the weekend up north in Maine. I have homes in Lyman and Portland. I live in Topsfield Ma where Freeman O Stanley, while travelling at breakneck speed over the hills on route one came suddenly upon a horse cart in the road and overturned his car avoiding a collision. He broke his neck and died afterward at Beverly Hospital.

Small world Larry - I built a house for my parents in Lyman in 1999. They relocated from Maynard MA and have been there since. My mom was waitressing at Ashleys restaurant on weekends up until a year ago, bet you ran into her if you ever went there.

Hey you eastern members, we need a get together in the Porland area. Maybe the guys from NH, VT, etc like fresh ocean fish also. Lots of GREAT lobster shacks, some one pick a date in June and a location and let's see who shows up. :)

Sorry gents the photos from my last response got deleted. Will attempt one more time from the office and if that fails I will upload from the house later this evening.

I bought a house on Wadleigh Pond in Lyman in 1999. We have had a number of pleasant breakfasts at Ashley's and would probably recognize your mother. I went to the flea market in Arundel Monday morning and picked up a nice 1940 Chevrolet owner's manual. Anybody need it?

Hey Mark, It seems you are in my neck of the woods, I am about 20 miles NE of Skowhegan, in St. Albans. Next time you are up pm me, I would love to get together and talk shop.

Indeed Jay, camp is not too far from you at all. When I travel north I've been taking the Belgrade lakes exit from 95 and sneaking over through Farmington and then north on 27. In the past I was heading 201/201a north thru Skowhegan then west thru Madison over to North New Portland. We've even done the southern approach through Lewiston Auburn and up. So I know the area pretty well, but I've not been to St. Albans yet.

Every year the wife and I try to find some new areas to explore and if I can combine a field trip to see some old cars then its all the better. Throw a beer or two and some good conversation on top of that and its nearly a perfect day! I'll send a PM your way with my contact info so we can arrange a visit this summer.

Well Then, if you have not been to St Albans, you have yet to try the Prime rib at the Sunrise Cafe! It's the best around, and Iv'e been Around....
