Ok Thanks!

The 6 volt relay I received came in todays mail and it looks to be a Bosh relay. now that I’m looking at it, it appears to have just numbers instead of numbers and letters.  Here is some pictures of it.

Any Ideas?

Thanks,

It looks like these terminals are labeled 85, 86, 87, 87a and 30.  In looking at you response Jim, I’m just making a preliminary guess of the following:

Main power connects to 86

Shift knob switch switch connects to 85

O/D Solenoid Connects to either 87 or 87a

Does this sound right or do I have it mixed up?

Thanks again Jim, for your response!

Whoops! I forgot to add:

Power connects to 30.

So here is my theory of all the connections:

Main power connects to 86

Shift knob switch switch connects to 85

O/D Solenoid Connects to either 87 or 87a

Power connects to 30

Thanks to Merle's helpful information I think it should be as follows:

86 = shift knob switch

85 = power

30 = power

87 or 87a = to O/D solenoid.

Yes, that sounds much better! Thanks Jim and Merle for your expertise!

I can’t wait to get the kickdown switch working.  I’ve been driving this old girl with a standard 3 speed since forever and it’s been a slow go.  I had found a 54 with overdirive last year at a local salvage yard and had been working on the guy to sell me the R10 ever since.  He finally sold it to me a couple of weeks ago and I did the transplant last weekend. Boy what a difference it makes going down the road!

I’m using GL 1 in 90 weight for lubrication and I was able to give it one test run on Sunday.  The O/D shifted in and out in second and third gear with ease

Any other recommendations on this overdrive such as maintenance or things to watch for would be most appreciated. Now that I finally have this, I want to make sure it lasts.

Thanks again for your help!

Attaching crudely drawn diagram to use VW latching type relay with push button OD on/off.

Vw part # is for 12v setup.

6 volt VW switch is avail. per Jim Yergin, I wrote down that part # somewhere, Hope Jim still has it. It's wired the same!

You pic is for a Heavy duty Bosch type standard relay, but is not a latching type, therefore button must be held down to Down shift. When button is released, Od shifts back to OD. The latching type holds your choice of on/off until button is pushed again.

Your choice as to which you want.

Found this pic of VW relay online. Terminal locations are differant than the diagram for 12v. I believe that the wiring is still the same.

As I recall from posts of several years ago, some fellow mounted his kickdown switch at the bottom edge of his dash so

he could push it by hand.   Another mounted it under the carpet below the brake and clutch pedals so he could

step on it with his foot (like the dimmer switch).

I totally missed that the Dutchman's relay was not a locking relay. I don't think you want to use a non-locking relay with the momentary shift knob switch. If you do then you will have to push down on the switch knob continuously in order to keep the O/D engaged. The VW part number I have is # 311 945 581.

It does not affect the operation of the O/D but I have wired in two indicator lights to let me know the status of the O/D.

ODlights.jpg

The one light is connected to the #4 terminal on the solenoid and lights up when the solenoid is energized. The other light is operated by my original O/D relay through the #6 terminal on the solenoid. It lights up when the solenoid pawl physically engages the O/D.

hey thanks guys! I originally ordered the relay believing that they, “ the the shop I bought it from", ordered me a locking relay. glad you let me know it’s not. I’ll have to return it and give them the part number you showed me.

Thanks agin!

Does anyone know where I can get this relay?

I took the relay part number 311945581 to Napa and Bap/Geon and they can't match it or order it.

The kickdown switch is a nice feature of the OD but if it was not there you could get a similar result by downshifting. In my driving, seldom do I ever use the switch. Perhaps other folks use it a lot.
