Does anyone run a mild (or less mild) cam with a dual-carb set-up?

If so, I'd love to get reports of how the motors idle and what differences you have experienced.

Any advice on spec (and suppliers) would be appreciated.

I'm just considering whether or not to make the change, to get the most out of my dual carb set-up.

Thanks.

Robin.

Robin;

Here are some links to hear Richies lumpy cam. His engine lopes a lot more than my engine does. I do not know his cam specs and I do not think he does either. Believe he got this cam from George Asche. Richie uses this car as his daily driver and has been on several long road trips.

Don that is a great sound...thanks.

Do you happen to know what kind of muffler Richie is running?

Pat;

Not sure what mufflers Richie is using. I will ask him next time I talk to him. Last I talked to him he was knee deep in his Hudson.

Don,

Thanks for the video clips.

That engine sounds amazing. Wow!

Makes me consider it even more.

I'll catch up with George Asche about specs.

Anyone else got experience of George's (or other) hot cams?

Thanks.

Robin.

Robin;

I will try and get Richie to chime in here. I do know that he had a couple of cams he got from George Asche. I believe Richie still has the hottest (most lumpy) cam at home as he did not install it. The cam he installed was the milder of the two.

I found Richies e-mail address in the Members List. I just sent him a link to this thread. Hopefully he will respond.

Don, just got your e-mail. Hello guys, it been a while !! thanks for all the nice comments. If I remember correctly Robin is running a big block, my engine is a 236" P-15 engine. The cam is called a 435 ground to George Asche's specs. He calls it a square cam as the specs are: lift 435- duration I don't remember, intake opens 20deg B.T.D.C. and closes 58deg A.B.D.C. / exhaust opens 58deg B.B.D.C. and closes 20deg A.T.D.C.. I have two big block cams from George, one is installed in my rebuilt 251 DeSoto motor and has never been run, so I can't say what it would sound like. The other cam is a track cam that George had, pretty wild according to him. It is sitting on the shelf covered in oil. I have the specs on both big block cams if you want them just let me know. Richie.

The more I thought about it, I think Robin is running a small block 218, sorry about that !! Richie.

Robin I run a 218 with a reground cam and dual Carters. I lopes real nice at idle and overall it runs great. Best running flathead I've had. The roll on acceleration from 55 to 75 mph is really impressive for such a small motor and heavy car. Here is the spec sheet that came with the cam.

Post your cam specs Richie for us long block guys, interesting to compare, haven't seen a bad grind on this site yet.

Phill, here is what I have,#400 cam; intake opens 15 deg BTDC, closes 45deg ABDC exhaust opens 51 deg BBDC closes 9 deg ATDC. This is the one in my 251.

Track cam for a 251 no#, just track cam; intake opens 27deg BTDC closes74 deg ABDC exhaust opens 64 deg BBDC closes 18 deg ATDC.

In George's numbering system the cam number indicates the lift, I don't know what the durations are for these cams.

I took this info off the tags that George sent along with the cams.

Pat, this is the second exhaust system on my car, the first one was junk. They didn't let me in the work area til the car was on the ground and finished. When I got home and checked it out it was totally wrong. I had another guy put the current system on and it is nice. The mufflers are the "in-between" is what the guy called them. I didn't want that rap noise and I didn't want it stock, so he came out with the "in between" ones. They are 4" in dia. and about 22" long. The 4" section is about 18"long if I remember correctly. They are straight threw but with baffle material for the full length of the 4" dia. There is no loud drone noise on the highway, just a low level purr !!! I don't get tired of the noice, so it can't be too loud. Richie.

How's that Hudson coming along, Richie? Pictures?

Hey Brad, how are you doing? The Hudson is coming along OK thanks. It needed lots of work that I was unaware of. Drove it this morning about 25 miles, some highway but mostly surface roads. It needs overdrive to be a dependable highway car like my P-15 is. The Hudson rides really good and has pretty good power, I still like my P-15 as my number "1" though.

I posted a pic way back when this forum started, but I've forgotten how I did that !! I may try it again later today, got to run. Talk to you later, Richie.
