autoexpressionist.com Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 I have a '47 Plymouth and am wanting to go with the narrow belt crankshaft and water pump pulley. My question is, what cars came with the 2-piece crank pulley with the narrow belt? I was hoping to leave the hub in place and just replace the outer part. Thanks, Dan Quote
autoexpressionist.com Posted March 14, 2012 Author Report Posted March 14, 2012 Just realized this is my first post and thought I better introduce myself. My name is Daniel Brown and I'm an automotive fine artist. I bought my P15 for some inspiration (or so I told my wife!). Here are a few images of recent paintings. If anything looks familiar, I have been featured in several magazines, but most are of the hot rod/custom flavor. I did have a feature in Hemmings Classic Car last year, though. Quote
Alshere59 Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 (edited) Hey Dan welcome to the forum. I like your work. http://www.hemmings.com/hcc/stories/2009/08/01/hmn_feature10.html http://www.autoexpressionist.com/ I guess this is my way of saying the search feature on the forum is your friend. With that you get these links and my answer. http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=29779&highlight=narrow+pulley Now for your question. The two piece pulley are hit and miss it seems. I am assuming you mean a Harmonic balancer with a pulley versus just the pulley. I have two P20 motors both are narrow pulleys only one has a harmonic balancer attached and it can not be removed separately that I remember. You can try posting in the parts wanted section of the forum. I can send just the narrow pulley if you want just PM me. The link says you may be able to do it but I do not know that. Andydodge Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 Gidday from sunny Sth Grafton, Australia............I have a 41 Plymouth with the wide pulleys, it appears that the narrow pulleys came into use around 1950, but I have also heard of the narrow pulley on pre war cars......as for the pulleys with the harmonic balancer, I think they were only on the narrow pulleys BUT I am happy to be shown I was wrong.......therefore what year and what car to look for?..........early 50's would be a good start.........let us know what you find.........lol.........andyd Quote
autoexpressionist.com Posted March 14, 2012 Author Report Posted March 14, 2012 Thanks Niel and Al for the comments on my work. I did a good bit of searching and didn't find the answers I'm looking for. The two piece pulley I'm referring to is one that has the pulley part that separates from the hub. The hub is what is pressed onto the crank. Some of the later ones were one piece, pulley/hub. I do have a damper on mine that bolts to the pulley, but that's not the issue. Andy, The car is a '47 Plymouth Special Deluxe. I converted to 12V with a later model generator. The later gen takes the narrow belt, and I wanted to change the other pulleys in case I ever go to a alternator. Thanks! Hey Dan welcome to the forum. thrashingcows Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 The original 251 motor that was in my 48 Desoto had wide pullies, and a harmonic balancer. Quote
Andydodge Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Dan, there are a few different pulley versions...I have 4 pulleys or parts thereof.......lol....... 1st is the one that came with the 1941 Plymouth, its a wide pulley, 8 rivets holding the hub onto the pulley and has been "machined" it seems about 20 thou or so by a previous owner, so the speeedie sleeve I have is too big. 2nd is the one that came with the ex airport tug 230 Industrial engine, it is/was a thin 2 piece pulley thats spot welded onto the hub, but the outer edge of the pulley is a bolt on affair and is missing...........buggar!!. 3rd is a NOS hub that I bought on ebay a few mths ago, thought it may work, lol.......its just the hub, lovely and pristine, unused BUT it is held onto a pulley(that I don't have) with 6 bolts so its not compatible with the pulley from # 1 above. And Finally # 4 is a complete virginal unmolested, 8 rivet, wide pulley that the speedie sleeve will fit onto...........oh joy.......... Mr Chrysler did some really good engineering things BUT crank pulleys would seem to have been low on the list of consistancy.........lol.....good luck in the hunt........andyd Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Welcome to the forum. What part of Ohio do you reside in? My 1953 Desoto engine has the narrow belts and a bolt on balancer and pulley as pictured below. Quote
1941Rick Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 If it is about pulley size you can get wide belt pulley's for alternators and gens. Quote
autoexpressionist.com Posted March 15, 2012 Author Report Posted March 15, 2012 That's what I'm looking for Don! I'm headed out to the old stuff salvage yard next week and I'll keep my eye out for one. Pretty sure the car I got parts off of last time was a '53 Chrysler, but not sure. This gives me hope, though. I live in Troy, which is about 20 mi. North of Dayton. Thanks! Quote
Alshere59 Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 What salvage yard are you heading to if you don't mind sharing? If your headed down to Dayton, Starks is the only one that comes to mind and they like their parts alot and are priced accordingly. I was kinda hoping there may be another one somewhere close that didn't have as much sentimental value. Quote
autoexpressionist.com Posted March 15, 2012 Author Report Posted March 15, 2012 Starks is the one! Their stuff is getting pretty well picked through or too far gone, but I've had some luck. If you deal with the ol' man, everything is $20. I have never heard him say anything else. Quote
Alshere59 Posted March 16, 2012 Report Posted March 16, 2012 I get the kid every time. Well three trips. May have to try it again. Quote
Captain Neon Posted March 18, 2012 Report Posted March 18, 2012 I was born in Piqua. Haven't been there since I was 2. I don't remember any thing about living there. I some times wonder how different my life would be had we stayed, and I graduated from PHS and gone to Ohio State. Quote
