tear down questions

Its been awhile, but I remember switching an oil pump. It unbolts from the passenger side, and should just pull out if I remember correctly. Since you're going to tear it down completely, rotating the crank shouldn't matter-you'll need to retime the distributor after you go back together. Mike

This motor sorta sounds like a wreck but likely salvageable, no point being dainty, just start pulling it all apart and bag and tag your parts, oil pump will come out with just the 2 or 3 bolts, distb will need to be reset anyway once you rebuild so not worth worrying about

You should take lots of detail pictures prior to disassembly. This will help a lot when the time comes to re-assemble. Make sure you have assembly marks on all rod and main bearing caps as they must be re-installed in the same location. Assembly marks are normally done at the factory so look for them.

If you look closley you can see the numbers on the piston rod and rod cap as well as the main bearing cap.

In this picture you can see the alignment marks I made with a center punch and a paint stick for flywheel alignment as the flywheel will only go on in the same position as when removed.

The middle main caps are typically not marked and should be. Center punch with 2 and 3 dots is what I do. Put them off to the side and on the block so you know which way they went.
