old rat 49 Posted December 10, 2011 Report Posted December 10, 2011 I've given up on finding knobs I can afford so I am going to attempt to make my own. Something without markings that I can use for anything. Am thinking that I can use dry transfer letters and spray with clear coat. Not for shpow but I'll have something to grab hold of. Anybody tried anything similar themselves ? Heading to the craft shops tommorow. Will try to do a shift and vent kno too but don't have a shift knob to start with. From what I've seen it is basically a larger dash knob. Would that be correct ? Quote
chopt50wgn Posted December 10, 2011 Report Posted December 10, 2011 you tried looking at Ebay ..........I've seen whole dashes go for 25 bucks, knobs and all. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 11, 2011 Report Posted December 11, 2011 Not much in dash knobs on the bay right now. But, yes, sometimes there are decent deals. Try looking in the parts for sale section of this forum too. Another thought......I think 46-48 Dodge knobs are similar, although a darker shade of brown. Should be a pretty close substitute.....but not much on the Dodge stuff for sale right now. The original shift knob is similar in size to dash knobs, just has the threaded hole to match size of threads on shift lever. A set of knobs put out by the factory, appear along on ebay....... Back side of some dash knobs.....screw on with set screw to hold. Cowl vent knob............ Quote
oldmopar Posted December 11, 2011 Report Posted December 11, 2011 A few years back there was someone who was selling reproductions of I think the Plymouth knobs. I forget who or where but maybe some other forum member remembers who was selling them Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 11, 2011 Report Posted December 11, 2011 I know where a set of the Heater Control Pkg. knobs can be found..35.00 includes shipping lower 48 states..be hard to imagine you could make them cheaper or nicer than stock originals.. Quote
JohnTeee Posted December 11, 2011 Report Posted December 11, 2011 Don't know what range is affordable, or how acute your need is, but you might contact Kevin Carroll - kevin@scottmodels.com. I thought he was listed in the Links section, but could not find him. He has molds for all of the interior plastic for P15. I bought a couple of knobs from him several years ago. Does nice work. Cheers! John Quote
builtfercomfort Posted December 11, 2011 Report Posted December 11, 2011 A friend of mine is talking about using Delrin (machinable dense plastic) and a small bench-top lathe to turn his own dash knobs. That way he can get whatever profile he wants. But he hasn't figured out how to get clean-looking inset printing on the face yet - he wants the letters machine cut, not hand cut. He may put a recess in the front so a separate label part can snap in. (I'm not sure he's ever going to get to it, actually. Still, it seems feasible to me.) Quote
