Whatever you use, don't over torque them. The tapered nuts and beveled washers being different metals were made to allow for movement of the manifolds against the block as they go through heating and cooling cycles.

I think I read somewhere that it was 18 and 20 lb ft.

Eric, you may already know this. It's best to install the heat riser gasket but leave the 4 bolts loose that attach the intake and exhaust manifolds, until the manifolds are bolted in and tightened. That allows everything to match up to the motor better. Then you tighten those 4 long bolts last.

That's a rip when you can get them in the hardware store for a couple of bucks.

You must have a better hardware store nearby than I do; I've never seen a brass tapered and slotted nut at any of the ones near me!

Marty,

It's a True Value Hardware store. It's not just one of your bubble wrap hardware stores, it's a real one. There is also another one just like it a few blocks west of me. You can go to either one and find just about anything you want. People actually know what they are selling in them. They will also cut pipe, repair windows, mowers, etc. If you can't find what you want, go to the owner and tell him. He'll dig out his catalogs, find it and order it for you without prepayment. They provide good service and the prices are just as good as the big box stores, and with much better service. My sump pump went out during a heavy storm back in the late 90's. Called the store near me and he didn't have any left in this store, but did have one in the other store 15 miles south of me. Called the big box stores around me and they were sold out too. Called the True Value back and told him I wanted the one in the store 15 miles away. He called his father at the other store and it was by the counter waiting for me when I got there with my name on it. He only had one other one left.

So......you may be right, my hardware store may be better than yours.:)

P.S. It doesn't hurt when the owner of the store also owns a 36 Ford 5 window coupe all restored original.:cool:

Marty;

I believe the slotted nut is steel and the internally tapered ring is brass. The brass nuts go against the flat steel washer.

Totally Stainless sells the manifold studs in stainless steel to fit our cars for about $6.00 each. Buy one or buy a hundred.

I bought replacement steel studs at the local mom & pop hardware store for a lot less than six bucks each. Believe they were less than a buck each. They were not bubble packed but in bulk bins. On the way home from work yesterday I stopped by the local farm store to buy some bolts for my carburetor upgrade. They had what I wanted but they were bubble packed two per package @ eighty nine cents per package. I should have gone to mom & pop hardware but the farm store was on the way.
