  1. Thank you everyone for your comments. I am going to attempt next weekend. Will let you know how it turns out.
  2. Seat belts. What the heck is everyone thinking
  3. I want to adjust the valves in my 48 plymouth. It has a 1951 motor, but I think the clearance should be the same. Do I need to take off the intake and exhaust to get to the valves? What should the clearance be and which one is the intake and which one in the exhaust? Thank you for all the help. It has been awhile since I have posted a thread. My car is driving and everything seems to be good. Next is going to be the body and paint.
  4. Which side of the car (pass or driver) has the reserve threads on the lug nuts. I am having a hard time taking both sides off and am second quessing myself. I just don't want to break one.
  5. Wow, that is alot.* I was hoping someone would say, just put in ball joints and call it a day. I just got a new kingpin set. I don't know if it is the right one though. It is Thompson Product Part number 355AX. does anyone know if that is the right part? How would I check to see, beside tearing down the whole front end. Eric
  6. I recently upgraded my vehicle from a project to a driver. I spent alot of hours working on my Plymouth and I want to thank all of you for helping me out along the way, I love my 1948 2 door and now that it is running I am going to start tweaking it here and there to make it perfect (well as perfect as it can get). Does anyone know a source that can rebuild kingpins? I have never done one. I am going to rebuild the entire front end and have been collecting parts for a few month now. Any help would be appreciated. Eric
  7. Thanks Norm's Coupe, I will try, but I am not that savy with the photo stuff. Eric
  8. I am trying to post pics of my car and it is telling me my file types are to large. What can I do? Eric
  9. I will takes some pics tomorrow and post....I promise. I have never posted a pic of my car on this forum so I wll try. I have not washed the car in all this time so I will wash and take some pics.
  10. After 2 in a half years or so, it is on the road. I took it to get an exhaust put on and after that drove it around for a while. It cruzzed nice. I need to do a little front end work, but that will come in time. It has some good pick up and shifts really nice. I have never really driven an old car like this so I had no idea what to expect. It is no 2007 Charger let me tell you. Got a lot of shares and honks......I still don't know if that was because they liked the car or I was so darn slow that I was in everyones way? I now have something I can drive around in and enjoy. Eric
  11. I am trying to mount my front seat back in my 48. I replaced some of the floor and now there is no references to where I need to remount the seat frame. Can someone help me out with this. I was just going to mount where ever it felt good, but I will try here first. I am driving it over to get a muffler this week and need a seat to side on. Thanks Eric
  12. I have a 48 plymouth 2 door and have a question about the rear lights. It has the center brake and that seems to be working just fine. It lights up when I press on the brakes. My two other tail lights don't light up when I hit the brakes. I check the wiring diagram and it show the center light as being the only brake light and the other two and running and turn signal. When I checked the wiring, it was sent up as just the center light as being the sole brake light just the way it show in the wiring diagram. Is this right?
  13. I used a differential from a mid 80's jeep cherokee with 3.55 ratio. I had to cut off the old spring perches and weld on new ones, but the overall width of the axle was just about the same as the original. It seems to take off just fine, but I really have nothing to compare it to seeing how I never drove one with the original rear end in it. Since it is lowered I plan on using a tad shorter tire which will aid in the higher rear end gear ratio.
  14. Hi all, I have been working on my 1948 Plymouth 2 door sedan now for about 3 years. I bought it from a guy in LA and brought it up here to Sacramemto. It has been a long road, but it is well worth every minute I spend with it. What I have done is: New Brake lines, new 2 stage master cyl, brakes all around with wheel cyl, modern rear end with new drive line, new gas tank, motor that has been rebuilt, trans that has been rebuilt, and I cut out all the rust in the floors and just completed welding all new floor panels. All the wiring has been replaced and light all work. I still need to mount in seat and take it to a muffler shop for a new exhaust. Other then that it drives great. The car has been lowered by cutting the front coils and blocks that I machined on the mills at my school. I want to buy new rims and WWW for that 50 or 60 hot rod look. I will post a pic tomorrow (will try anyways) Let me know what you think. By the way I have a 5 year old kid and he loves to get right in the mix and get all greasy. The next generation on old car lovers. Have a good one. Eric
  15. Does anyone know a source for a dimmer switch. I finally got the my 48 2 door sedan running and now am working on the lights issue. I am almost at the point of driving it around as a weekend cruzer......almost.
  16. In Sacramento,CA I have seen it as low as 3.07 a gallon. Diesel is about 3.49 at its cheapest stations.
  17. Installed a dual master in my 48 2 door sedan. It was a very easy install. I had to drill one hole and other then that it was bolt on application. I am still using drums all the way around and had to put a valve on the line going to the front brakes. The Master provided is set up for disc and not drums so hence the valve. I had to redo some brake lines, but that was easy. I really like the set and feel a little more at ease with the dual master. Eric
  18. Norm, I understand that he probably went a little overboard and I am just repeating what he said to me. I am going to get the sending unit and split the volts right before the unit inself. That should do the trick. Thank you for the referral.
  19. Norm, I called that guy you referred me to and he said that 6 and 12 volts do make a difference. The sending units that they put into the tanks have heat to them to run the float. The heat is low, but if you run a 12 volt system through the sending unit that is designed for 6 volts it can make for an interesting day (Boom). You need to split a 12 volt system in order to run the correct sending unit.
  20. I bought a new tank for my 48 plymouth. It has the 6 cylinder motor with 12 volts to it. The original sending unit is bad and need to get a new one. I have called a couple of shops up and they need to know what the ohms (2 or 4)of the original gauge is to match it up. Can someone shead some light on this issue. Does the now 12 volt system effect the outcome? The only other option I have is to buy an after market gauge and mount it. Eric
  21. Like I said in the original message, I was just a little off. I took off the plate and milled out the slots (both) to give me more of a range. It worked great. I now can adjust the timing all over the place. I did not want to index the oil pump, but I should of. Bottom line is it works great and the engine sound like a dream. ERic
  22. Well, I timed the beast. I settled with about 5 degree before top dead center. I let the motor run for about 40 min and everything looked good. I am really happy that I got this thing going, I was starting to question why I was still working on this car. Thanks everyone for your help on this. Eric
  23. OK, I understand TDC and pulling off the oil pump. What I am having a hard time with is how do I know which way to reinstall the pump?
  24. Sorry I needed to vent. I will look into the indexing thing and see what is up. My car is at my school where I teach and we have a really great auto shop. I will lift it up and have the kiddies drop my pan.. .maybe the kids and I will both learn something.
  25. That just sounds like a lot of work. So I am assuming I have to drop my pan and reinstall my oil pump? If it is not one thing it is another. I have been working on this car for the past 2 in a half years and it is still not running. I sometimes get very frustrated. I take one step forward, just to take 2 backwards. We only live so long.
