BobT-47P15 Posted October 12, 2011 Report Posted October 12, 2011 (edited) Here's a shot of mine.......basically all black and silver. For the silver, I like POR 15s "POR 20" Hi Temp Aluminum....applied with a 2 inch brush. Edited October 12, 2011 by BobT-47P15 Quote
Drdialtone Posted October 13, 2011 Report Posted October 13, 2011 Bob, What sort of prep did you do before using the Por-20? Quote
p24-1953 Posted November 5, 2011 Author Report Posted November 5, 2011 where's the best place to get the p o r 15 ? is it any better than standard engine paint ? Were the firewalls always body color ? Quote
55 Fargo Posted November 6, 2011 Report Posted November 6, 2011 where's the best place to get the p o r 15 ?is it any better than standard engine paint ? Were the firewalls always body color ? Google POR 15, and you can find a local dealer, or have it shipped to your door. You can also try Zero Rust, some claim it is a better product, personally I like Tremclad (Rustoleum) in the USA. Most Mopar firewalls are the body paint color of the car...... Quote
RobertKB Posted November 6, 2011 Report Posted November 6, 2011 Were the firewalls always body color ? On my Canadian built '53 Plymouth the firewall is body colour and I believe it is true for American cars as well. Now, I believe in '54, although I might be wrong, that the firewall was usually painted grey no matter what the body colour. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. Quote
greg g Posted November 6, 2011 Report Posted November 6, 2011 NAPA has a POR clone for about half price. I saw it at one of thier paint stores. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted November 6, 2011 Report Posted November 6, 2011 Bob,What sort of prep did you do before using the Por-20? Not much really......made sure not greasy or oily......you can use a wire brush for scaley and flakey places. I applied mine with a 2 inch paint brush......that puts it on thicker than using a spray can. I had to tape a piece of lath to the brush handle to reach some places down low and at front of the motor. There are other good products out there.....but I feel like the POR has endured better than anything I previously used. It won't last forever and it does cost a bit.....but I'm satisfied with it. JohnTeee Posted November 6, 2011 Report Posted November 6, 2011 Here's a shot of mine....... Bob, What's that round electrical component with the heavy cables up on the driver's side of the dash? Is it anything like the device next to my voltage regulator? I have engine compartment envy! Cheers! John Quote
greg g Posted November 6, 2011 Report Posted November 6, 2011 I believe that is a battery shut off switch, that bob can controll for anti theft or extended storage. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 1, 2012 Report Posted January 1, 2012 To answer questions above........that is indeed a battery cutoff switch. I simply mounted it in a hole already in the firewall due to having dual heaters originally. I only use one heater now, on the passenger side. That POR is like a pint can, I think.....it's fairly small.....seems like it cost about $15 or maybe $20 - been a while since I bought it. That paint spreads pretty well and a can goes farther than you may think. I bought my last can or two from a place in Nashville, TN while I was visiting down there. Others sell it......just check the net. My take is that by brushing it on, it is thicker than what I could do with a spray can...therefore it holds up longer. Bell housings and (I think) trannys were also silver. Quote
54Illinois Posted January 1, 2012 Report Posted January 1, 2012 Thanks Bob. The going price for the pint is around $30 or so. Ebay has it $35 shipped. I thought the same with applying by brush, better coverage than the spray. I may order a can. I got the motor pulled, so I will crawl in the belly, scrub the tranny, and touch it up and make it pretty as well. Quote
