blueskies Posted April 10, 2007 Author Report Posted April 10, 2007 Pete, here are some photos of the balancer off the P18 engine I'm working on right now. Interesting... I've never seen a 218 with the balancer (but then again, what do I know...). I ordered a six bolt 230 hub to replace the two bolt 218 hub that I have on my engine. Now to get a pulley and balancer to mount and I'll be good to go. I'm assuming the holes are indexed so the pulley and balancer can only go on one way because the timing marks are on the balancer? My existing pulley is stamped with the timing marks. I was looking over some old pics, and I think my pulley/hub are the one piece unit, and there was a large bolt to hold it to the crank. I had to get a different bolt to mount the hub/pulley to the 230 crank, as it was a different size (smaller) than the original. I still have the old large bolt in a box in the garage. Pete Quote
Johnny S Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 The timing marks on this one are on the balancer. You can see the long(er?) timing tab that extends all the way out to the balancer. This engine came out of a 49 4-door sedan and is stamped with a P18 serial number. Quote
Young Ed Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 Pete the older 218s have the balancer. My p15 one has it while my p23s don't(my truck has a p23 engine). I wonder with mopar being known for quality engineering why they stopped putting them on the cars? Quote
Dennis Hemingway Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 Pete. Here is the balencer on my 1948 218. Dennis Quote
blueskies Posted April 10, 2007 Author Report Posted April 10, 2007 I stand corrected... didn't realize that the earlier production engines had them... I wonder if they stopped putting them on because the 218 was nearing the end of it's production, to save dollars? My car is a late production '50, it has the narrow fan belt which changed over sometime late in the year. Learn something new every day... Pete Quote
Young Ed Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 The 218 still lived on until 54. I think after that it was just the 230. I wonder if the 230s then had a damper or not? Also I think all 50s have the skinny belt. Dads 50 is very early(its titled as a 49) and I'm 99% sure it has the narrow one also. Quote

greg g Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 I wonder if it had something to do with the difference between fluid drive and non fluid drive on the 230. My early p15 218 has a damper, the 56 230 which was conected to a standard had a damper. Perhaps the fluid drive cars didn't have them as the fluid mass would tend to soak up crank vibrations???? Just a guess. Quote
blueskies Posted April 10, 2007 Author Report Posted April 10, 2007 Just picked up a pulley and balancer on the bay, $26.95. $7.50 for the parts, $19.45 for the shipping.... Thanks Greg for the tip- Should clean up fine, and mate to the hub I bought yesterday. Pete Quote
james curl Posted April 11, 2007 Report Posted April 11, 2007 I sent my damper to the Damper Doctor on the west cost in the USPS "flat rate priority box for #8.10. Much cheaper than UPS or Fed Express. Quote
