No, the generator does not need to be on to run but if you plan on running the engine for more than a real brief time, you'll need it for tensioning the fan belt.

Now, tell us what you've done, what you've tested, how far down the primary circuit you have power. Trace your power from the switch to both sides of the coil to the dist, through to the points. If all that works, meaning you have those little arcs at the points when turning over, you can go on to the secondary side of ignition- the heavy coil wire, rotor, cap, plug wires, plugs.
