:confused:Ok, I tried to remove the transmission in preparation of pulling the engine. It's a three speed, column shift with fluid drive (so it's a little longer than normal). The book says just remove the four bolts holding the trans to the clutch housing and slide the trans back and out. My problem is that the parking brake drum hits on the cross member before the trans clears the spline. Am I missing something here or do I really have to remove the cross member (which means I also need to remove the gas tank...)? HELP!

Jim, You got a bunch of work ahead of ya! I went to a non FD 4 speed years ago.

On second thought, I think I'll just button up the tranny and pull the whole kit 'n kaboodle out as a unit. That way I don't have to mess with the gas tank and cross member...;)

My truck has the Fluid Drive with a 4 speed. This arrangement is so long that the park brake drum is nearly touching the cross member in normal operation. When I pulled the engine for the rebuild several years ago I pulled the trans first. To clear the cross member I jacked up the front of the engine so that it would tip down at the back of the trans. Even with that I had to remove the brake band, which wasn't very easy with the lack of room, and it still bearly cleared coming out. What a P.I.T.A.

Last winter when I pulled the trans for a clutch job I dropped the fuel tank and removed the cross member. That made the job SO much easier.

why not just pull brake drum off. i cant really remember its been along time when i did mine but i think its just a cotter pin and nut. i pulled my fluid drive without removing all of that.

If I were just doing a clutch job, that would be the way to go. However, I'm replacing the motor so I'll just pull evrything out at once. :)

Jim,

INHO, I believe removing the emergency Brake Band, and then removing the Selenoid and Governor and then removing the transmission before removing the engine is in your best interest. The reason why is so simple. If its already "tight" in there to remove the transmission you stand a high probability of jostle and damage to parts trying to swing all that out in one piece. Your Vehiclce your call. I removed all that stuff first, and in so doing didn't need to fix any potential damage later on. Good Luck!

Besides wrestling the nut off of the Band after removing everything will be some trick with all that movement - ie - its not bolted to the car anymore.
