I have a 3 spoke chrome horn ring and button I have no idea if it is original or not. What I do know is I can get it to work. I have rewired it, cleaned the spring and the brass with no luck, I give up.

Does anybody have just the standard round horn button they want to give up?

thanks

Here is my horn ring, I know it is probably something simple but cannot get it to ground so the horn will blow. I have put a new connector, wiring cleaned the spring, the brass inside the wheel and the button attachment clips but still nothing. I don't even know if this is the correct thing for my truck.

Anybody have any other ideas?

Thanks,

Steve

It's right but the spokes should line up with the wheel spokes...maybe the problem?

Be sure that your steering column is properly grounded. The horn grounds through the column and if the mounts are dirty (rusty) it may not be getting a good ground to complete the connection for your horn.

If you want to try buying a new horn button without the ring, Roberts sells them. Heres a link if thats the route you want to take. There are horn button repair kits around too from Andy B.

The column is grounded, the horn ring spokes will not line up with the steering wheel spokes.

Thanks for the response.

You may need to loosen the nut that retains the steering wheel and rotate the 3 legged bracket that the horn button/ring locks into. This will reindex the horn ring so that you can allign it to the steering wheel. Then while you're in there check for continuity between that bracket and the chassis. If there is no continuity you have no ground for the horn. If there is continuity than something isn't contacting properly when the horn button is depressed.

Here's another stupid, but obvious, question. Does the horn sound if grounded independantly of the wire that goes up the steering column? In other words, if you take a wire and connect it between a good ground point and the terminal that your horn wire is connected to on the horn, will it make noise? I would assume that these things have already been checked but it wouldn't be the first time that I have tried to help someone troubleshoot something only to find out that initial, fundamental, checks had been overlooked. So now I don't assume these things, I verify them.

From the pic it looks like he's got the std 3 spoke wheel (the one designed for the round center horn button). I wonder if the hub on the wheel is too thick to work with the spoked chrome ring which was designed to use with the Y shaped wheel. The bottom of the ring may be bottoming out on the face of the steering wheel center before it makes the ground. The wheels designed for the horn ring have a cutout lip around the center of the ring. Just something to think about or try. A way to verify this is to make the ground w/o the ring and see if the horn works. Mike

Merle, Ground the horn connection going to the steering wheel. If it beeps the horn is good. If not then check the horn adjustment bolt inside. If it does work, check the wire connection (rivet ?) where it goes to the ring.
