MBF Posted January 16, 2011 Report Posted January 16, 2011 I converted my '36 to 12 volts a few years back, and haven been using a sealed beam conversion kit that was already on the vehicle. I'm looking for a source for the 36's 6volt style headlight bulbs in a 12V application. I've searched NAPA, and they don't have anything. Is anyone aware of a street rod supplier that would sell these? These are the dual filament bulbs with the large flat base that has 3 holes for the pins mounted on the reflector to secure the bulb. I want to put my original lenses and reflectors back on the vehicle. Thanks- Mike Quote
greg g Posted January 16, 2011 Report Posted January 16, 2011 are the current bulbs part # 6006? standard round 7 inch bulbs? if so the standard round 7 inch 12 v would be the replacement. Most of them now are hologen so make sure your wires and grounds are in good shape. should be on the shelf at any parts store. tell them it for a 56 chevy, the old designation was T 3 Quote
TodFitch Posted January 16, 2011 Report Posted January 16, 2011 If you are looking for the a bulb in the original style but 12v, then it would be a "pre-focused" bulb. The original 6v Mazda number was #2331 with 32cp on both the high and low beams. Looks like the #2330 was a very similar bulb (RP-11 bulb shape, double contact pre-focused base with C-2V filaments). The #2336 looks to be the 12v equivalent of the 2330. I don't see the 2336 in my relatively current Phillips miniature lamps guide but a web search turns up this link: https://www.interlight.biz/light-bulb/2336 So that might work. On the other hand, Classic and Vintage Bulbs lists quartz-halogen versions in 6, 8 and 12v and they make a special note that it is available in 2331 and 2351 versions for Chrysler based cars. That would imply to me that maybe the 2331 and 2330 are not compatible in some way. Which could mean that the 2336 is not what you need either. A quartz-halogen bulb typically gives 40% more light than an incandescent for the same power so you might want that anyway. http://www.classicandvintagebulbs.com/page3.html Quote
Powerhouse Posted January 17, 2011 Report Posted January 17, 2011 (edited) you will need to get the MOPAR bulb style. the mounting prongs are in the wrong place on the other bulbs. I used to get the bulb from restoration supply in Escondido CA. Call them and ask which one you need to be sure. http://www.restorationstuff.com/What_s_New/Light%20Bulbs/BulbList.htm If they don't have them anymore, you can get the gm style pre focus bulb sockets NEW from them. I did that because one of my sockets was busted. The other broke soon as well. I have since converted my buckets to a new halogen bulb mount I got from vintiques. It allows the use of a modern 12 volt halogen bulb...but you have to cut a bit out of the original reflectors to make it fit. I may still have the prefocus socket I bought from them and a spare bulb... Edited January 17, 2011 by Powerhouse Quote
