i got my engine from merle, and its almost runnable, but i need to know how long i could let it run without any water, as the rest of the cooling system is about 4 hours drive from here, with the truck, but it needs to run to get it ready to drop in the truck in the spring. about how long could it sit idle before being unsafe to keep running. to some degree, less than a minute, but with it making no power, im kinda unsure.

Not long, maybe a minute or two max. What you could probably do to extend the run time would be to tape off the water pump area, or make up a temporary plate to seal off the front of the block, and fill it up with water. This would extend your run time by several minutes. It would allow heat to transfer into the water from the head and block. Once the water is hot shut it down and let it cool off. You won't have any circulation but it would allow it to heat more evenly without overheating certain areas.

Connect the upper and lower radiator hoses together when you fill it with water. This should give you 5-10 minutes of run time.

I actually did that when I fired up my rebuilt engine for the first time. It will build up a bit of pressure but it works. However, unless Josh has a spare water pump laying around there it may be a problem since that engine was missing that part.

what about like how you winterize a boat motor? Just plug a hose into the intake and turn the water on and let 'er buck?

the only reason i wont use any water is because it is a little frozen here in wisconsin. we had my truck running off of the hose when we first got it going, so once it warms up outside, we will do it again. right now, we cant get to the garden hose for water anyways, its winterized, and im NOT trying to carry water upstairs from the basement.

Make some simple block-off plate for the water pump holes. Then put some water in the block and put a block off plate on the top?

I wouldn't want to run it with no water at all. I would fear some hotspots on the cylinder walls.

A little bit of water should let you run it for a minute or so.
