TodFitch Posted January 7, 2011 Report Posted January 7, 2011 Cool vintage photos. I wonder if any small dealers remain. Some of those vintage photos show dealerships that weren't much larger than a small garage or filling station. I am not aware of any dealerships that small around here any more. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 7, 2011 Report Posted January 7, 2011 Back in the 50s, the Ford dealership was in a regular block of other business buildings in the town of 5000 I grew up in. Did have a garage area at the rear. Not much of a used car lot area. Across the street was the Chevy dealer, had a bit better suited building with lot at the side. I went there to inspect the new 53 and 54 Corvettes and the new Cameo Carrier pickups. The Chevy dealer was also a place to purchase your driver's license. The clerk asked my Mom "can you drive?", she said "yes", paid her dollar, and received her license. The husband of our high school study hall teacher was a salesman at the Chevy place. So, she ended up driving a new turquoise 54 Chevy convertible. Kept it several years. Thanks for the link to the pics Don. Quote
Big_John Posted January 7, 2011 Report Posted January 7, 2011 There's still a few small dealerships around. My son worked at a small Ford dealership (Dave Pirro Ford) in Skaneatles, NY. About 5 cars in the showroom and 3 salesmen. That's about as small as they come these days. Across the street was a tiny Chevy dealership. It had a two bay service department. That was lost in the Goverment Motors dealership purge. Quote
JerseyHarold Posted January 8, 2011 Report Posted January 8, 2011 Irwin Lincoln-Mercury is still in the same building on Route 9 here in Freehold, NJ. It has been modified quite a bit over the years. Matawan Ford isn't around anymore but the building is still there. Quote

Dennis_MN Posted January 9, 2011 Report Posted January 9, 2011 Yes, thank you for posting that slide show. I noticed one of the dealerships had a 1959 Volvo PV-544 in the window. I had one of those for about 4 years and it always reminded me of my first car, a 46 Ford 2 door sedan. By the way, the little Volvo was a fun car to drive with it's 4 speed stick, and rack and pinion steering. It had dual webber side draft carbs which were tough to keep in balance. And I kept looking to see if the Ford dealer who bought my grandmothers house and built a new garage in 1946 was there. There were some that looked like it but not included. That dealership building is gone and the original lot purchased by my great grandfather in 1895 is now vacant again. That was a fun slide show. Dennis in Minnesota Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 9, 2011 Author Report Posted January 9, 2011 One of the dealerships pictured (Bushong Ford) linked below is (was) located in the town in Ohio where I lived when I graduated from High School. http://www.flickr.com/photos/bossmustang/4214810030/ The building is still a ford dealership today now called "Statewide Ford".
