Still putting the car together. I attempted to connect my 48 DeSoto oil gauge today with new metal lines (Weatherhead in between) and ran into a snag. I thought that the flared metal line would connect directly to the oil gauge but it doesn't. The threaded fitting on the metal line will only screw into the oil gauge a short ways before it gets too tight. At that point, the tubing flare is no where near seated. Seems to me like the fitting on the oil gauge is tapered.

Also, looking inside the oil gauge fitting, I don't see the correct seat that would mate with the flared tubing. That leads me to believe I need a tapered adapter that would screw into the gauge, sealed with thread sealer. The other side would have the flared end to connect to the metal line.

Is my thinking correct, do I need an adapter?

Don't those have compression fittings? A little brass collar with tapered sides, and a cover that screws over?

Here's a pic of the one from my P15. Yours is probably similar. The tubing has a ferrule on it that appears to have a bit of a radius where it butts up against the female taper inside the oil gauge. Sorry the picture isn't better, but it's the best I could come up with with my camera.

Alan,Moose & Oldguy are right, its just a straight piece of pipe that goes into the oil guage with the small brass collar, these are called "olives" here in Oz, I ended up getting them at a local Hydraulic repair shop........the original mopar one is not the normal rounded shape but if you look closely at Oldguys pic you can see it has a concave area where it seats into the back of the oil guage.......have fun, there a pain but without them theres oil everywhere..........lol...........andyd

I believe a compression fitting with a ferrul is correct. On one of the first (60 or so mile) road trips in my car I felt something warm hitting my leg. My oil pressure gauge was leaking. A couple of turns with a wrench fixed the problem and it has not leaked sence.

Thanks guys, all of that makes perfect sense.

I'm using standard brake lines. After getting the information from you guys, I considered cutting the flare off the gauge end and using a compression ferrule. But, I'm afraid the brake line material will be way too hard to compress and seal.

I think I'll look for 3/16" copper or aluminum, then flare the end that attaches to the weatherhead flexible line. The weatherhead definitely takes a flared fitting, or at least the one I have does.

KB, thanks for the kind offer but I should be able to find a 3/16" ferrule, especially if I use copper.

Thanks everyone!

Any parts house should have brass fittings, if you are using flared automotive fittings the brass fittings are usually located near by for both flared and ferrule. Home Depot and Lowe's both stock the brass fittings and the compression fittings, ferrules.

Alan, do you also have this short hose with fitting on each end that

joins the oil line to the part of the line going to the gauge?

The black rubber line just behind the oil filter........

Bob, yes I have the rubber line. That's the one I called "weatherhead" in my initial post. I have a 12" line going from the engine fitting to the weatherhead just behind the oil filter similar to your set up. Now I need a line running from the weatherhead, through the firewall, to the gauge. This line will need a flared fitting to connect to the weatherhead, and a compression fitting to connect to the gauge.

Looking at your picture, I have some questions. You have several lines coming out of the firewall grommet. There is a large black line going down behind the engine, what is that.

I have only the temp gauge and the oil line coming out of the grommet on my car because I have an electric choke. Looks like you have an idle control cable. and a choke cable. Its the large black line I'm curious about.

Auto Parts stores have the oil gauge line kit. The line is small copper with the fittings.

Large item is speedo cable.

One is choke cable to carb.

One is throttle cable to carb linkage.

One is temp gauge.

A black wire is actually coming thru a hole

beside the grommet, goes to one of my 3

extra horns.
