Distributors - short and long block the same?

Can someone with superior knowledge please tell me if the distributors were the same in the short and long blocks and are they therefore interchangeable. Any distributor I have comes from a long block as all Canadian cars from 1938 on had the longer engine. I can't look it up in my Canadian parts book as it does not cover the short block engine. Any help appreciated.

drive shaft is longer on the long block, should be interchangable with switch of shaft.
