Howard Tarnoff Posted October 31, 2010 Report Posted October 31, 2010 Hi Gang, it has been quite awiles since I have posted. My overdrive continues to give us fits. Have any of you had an experience that the overdrive functions well for awhile, lets say 10 to 20 miles and then begins to give you problems. The first issue is it will not shift into 2nd overdrive, but functions in 3rd overdrive. Then after a few more miles 3rd overdrive is not working either. This has been an ongoing pain for a few years now. It is a long story that I hope to share once all is sorted out but for now all I can report is that Lawyers are involved. We are going to toss out all of the wiring that the last shop did and install a George Asche wire harness and see what that does. Thus far the solinoid and the kick down switch as well as the relay have all been replaced. This is really annoying so any help is appreciated. Quote
hkestes41 Posted October 31, 2010 Report Posted October 31, 2010 Howard, Mine went through a period of difficulty going into OD and then once in OD would jump out of OD all on its own. Always startled me when it would jump out as the revs shot up and it felt like someone had thrown out the anchor. I replaced my solenoid thinking this was the problem which did not fix the problem. So I totally rewired the system and have had no problems with it since. So hopefully your new harness will do the trick. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 31, 2010 Report Posted October 31, 2010 proper lubrication may have a part in this..are you running the correct weight/service fluid... Quote
suntennis Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 If all the parts you replaced are good, that leaves three other areas as possible trouble spots. You must have talked with George Asche about this. The three spots ars wiring, lockout rail switch and governor. To test the lockout switch, just run a wire connecting the two terminals on the switch along with engaging the OD and test drive. If you still have the problem, then remove the test wire and test the governor. All the governor does is ground the red wire from the lockout switch and the yellow wire from the kickdown switch and OD relay upon reaching governor speed. Quote
james curl Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Do a search for James Douglas's post about his experiences with his overdrive. Sounds like you might have some of the same problems that James had. Quote
Captain Neon Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 The more I learn a bout the R-10 OD. The more I realise that George Ashe is the best way to go. Quote

George sent me a wire harness and a 6 volt solinoid (Magoo is 12 volts). Put it all together and it worked fine for 246 miles! Driving home from a cruise Tuesday night and went from first to second and bam, nobody home. I am now back to a standard 3 speed with the cable pushed in to disengage. This is growing really old and the next step is to follow Don to a Tremec. Quote
suntennis Posted January 7, 2011 Report Posted January 7, 2011 The fact that the OD worked correctly for a while is a good sign that wiring is correct and something electrical is probably breaking down due to time and heat. Did you ever test the overdrive by bypassing the govenor? You can check with Asche on this, but I think all you would do is just ground out the wire from the lockout switch that goes to the govenor. All the govenor does is make a ground after a set speed, By doing this, you would be able to go into OD at any speed. If this fixes the problem, then there is a problem with the govenor. If the problem is still there, since you already replaced the solenoid, the OD relay would be suspect. There is a fix so hang in there. Good luck. Quote
1941Rick Posted January 7, 2011 Report Posted January 7, 2011 Your 6 volt sol will work with 12 volts....I believe the cable should be pulled out to disengage the O/D. The oil you use can cause problems. Some oils have additives added to make them more slippery and this causes the sprag clutch to slip. You should also look for an oil that is compatible with yellow metal, ie: thrust washers and snychro rings. The additives will attack the brass and eat it away. Really, the OD is a very simple transmission but must be serviced correctly. I would look at the govenor as it is speed operated. Maybe gummed up....another question...how does your speedo operate? It drives off the same drive gear as the govenor. If the gear is not loaded enough by the park brake drum it could be slipping.....just some thoughts Quote
