Alexander Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 Hi Folks, My replacement 3 speed sounds very noisy. When going down the road it almost sounds like a 1920's truck (like a gear box with out tapered gears). The sound is more apparent when decelerating in gear. The transmission shows to be full. gears shift fine otherwise. what could this be? is the gear box shot? Thanks Quote
james curl Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 You could have a worn cluster gear lay shaft. It could be worn where the cluster gear bearings run on the shaft. If it is noisy in neutral while coasting that is probably what it is. If you have a manual it will be covered in the transmission trouble shooting section. Quote
Alexander Posted October 13, 2010 Author Report Posted October 13, 2010 Thanks for the feedback However, the whining hum is only produced when the transmission has a load (accelerating or decelerating). in neutral or when the clutch is pressed its smooth and quiet. Quote
Reg Evans Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 1st gear in my 35 Dodge is pretty whiny too. Today I am going to drain the 80W90 and replace it with this stuff (SAE 140)to see if it quiets down. I'll report back with the results. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 you lucky to have some GL-4 on hand...all the new stuff is GL-5 and has sulfur in the mix..not good for yellow metal...that be some pretty heavy lube oil... Quote
old stovebolt Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 I have also had good luck with adding higher viscosity oil to quiet a manual trans. Cheaper than a re-build. Quote
Reg Evans Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 Well shucks. Just got back from a test drive after draining the old 80W90 and adding the New Hypoid SAE140 and I can't really hear any difference in the whining. Oh well....at least it has new gear oil now. Guess I'll have to install a floor mat with some sound deadening cause there is nothing there right now but bare metal and I don't have a radio to turn up. Quote
Alexander Posted October 13, 2010 Author Report Posted October 13, 2010 Reg thanks for the feedback. I was crossing my fingers for you. If it helped you, I was going to do the same. I wonder if these transmissions can be adjusted internally with shims to compensate for worn/noise gears. Bummer! I guess ill be looking for another transmission. Anyone have one they want to donate:) located in New Jersey. Thanks! Alex Quote
Reg Evans Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 Alexander. I would try changing to a heavier oil anyway. Yours might be making noise for a different reason than mine. Mine is a 1935 3 speed floor shift. Quote
suntennis Posted October 14, 2010 Report Posted October 14, 2010 If the noise is in all gears, problem may be just one or more bearings. The only way to check this out will be to remove and take apart the transmission. Another possibility would be the input shaft and cluster gear. Good luck. Quote
Frank Ollian Posted October 14, 2010 Report Posted October 14, 2010 GL-4 is still out there, I get it at Napa, you probably won't find it at Wally World or other box stores. Of course it's more expensive. Quote
james curl Posted October 14, 2010 Report Posted October 14, 2010 If the transmission is nosier in first, second and reverse it is more than likely the cluster gear bearings or shaft. If the noise goes away when in high gear then all of the load is off of the cluster gear and shaft as the input and out put shafts are coupled together for direct drive. If the noise is greatest when accelerating in first gear then you can almost be assured that the front bearing in the cluster gear or the shaft the bearing runs on is worn. It will only get louder as time goes on. Quote
