A new J C Whitney catalog came today---they have

...fibreglass fender skirts for the old MoPars, chrome wheel trim rings and even 6 volt one wire alternators. Plus there are probably other things to fit these cars. Just tossing this out to remind that there are still some things you can get easily. May be even more items in their on line catalog.

Bob,

They also have the peep mirrors real cheap in there. I've had a pair of them on my coupe since 1995. They are just as good as the expensive ones the rod shop sells. I know because someone gave me a pair that they bought from a rod shop at a street rod show. He paid $50 for the pair. Put one of those up against my under $20 pair from Whitney and they are exactly the same mirror.

People should get the paper catalog. Got mine yesterday too. Lot's of stuff in there. Once you buy something or get on the mailing list, the catalog never stops coming.

I agree Norm..some catalogs and retailers that are SPECIALITY shops like to gouge out the yang..take those welding clamps I showed not long back 4 for 30.00 from a certian state of the art retailer for body repair versus 8 for 4.99 at Harbor Freight and they are the same product. I somehow got a mailing list..sure it was through a certian magazine I subscribed to..they feature 165MPH bar stools etc..file 13..never crack the binding..

Hmmm.. the 1 wire 6v alt.'s are negative ground only?

I still plan to get some rockers from them and will have to look into their mirrors.

page 63 seats w/center console/small seat, seats B (eagle) look just like a pair I just purchased for $225.00 from my restoration buddy to go in my 50 chevy truck. Pulled them out of a mid 50's ford truck he's working on for a customer.

Supposed to be used but look new. Easily fix scratch on center console (has wood cup holders etc instead of vinyl) and thats the only repair needed. $225 compared to $1,299 hard to beat but much of whats found in JCWhitney is realy good compared to "specialty" items found in other places. Their fuel sending unit for the 46 to fs49 dodge fits fine and cant beat that price.

I see in the last post that a fuel sending unit is mentioned in the JC Whitney catalogue. I am looking for a 2 wire sending unit for a '47 Chrysler ambulance some of us are working on for the local Firefighters' Union Charity. Really need a sending unit. Is it possible for one of you guys to pass on some info regarding the sending unit they have and if possible a picture? Certainly be interested in price as well. I will try online but not sure if I will find it. Any info appreciated in advance.

This is not a common generic style sender..probably your only sorce for this may be NOS or Atwater Kent I think was mentioned at another time. This unit has a constant value resistor mounted with a floating (float arm) ground that divides the resistance as it moves so that whatever is on one side of the guage, the balance is felt on the other across the resitance spectrum. (approx 28-30 ohms)

ie 10 on A 20 will be on B

15 and 15 or 25 and 5 etc etc...

Ryan, any place that rebuilds starters & alternators & regulators can make you a neg or pos ground 1 wire Alt. Cost depends on who your dealing with. If no ones available in your area I know a place in Memphis, Dave's Armature Service, 3898 Jackson Ave., 38128 . 901-372-0620 . Ask for Chris. He's the owners son and has a 37 Plymouth business coupe project. Just called him and they do ship as well as take credit cards after confirmation.

I've had a 1 wire neg grnd alt built by them but Chris can build whatever you want.

I got these 5" mirrors from J C Whitney and I can see more of what's behind me than with the more expensive 4" peeps.

Hmmmm..I'll have to look into their fender skirts for my 38.

Well now, I guess if I were installint a new one-wire six volt alternator, it wouldn't matter one iota if it were positive or negative ground. Might need to reverse my two coil primary wires and battery cables, but nothing else on these vehicles is polarity sensitive. Am I missing something here?

Radio won't work. Otherwise everything else should work fine.

Speaking of 2 wire units. I put a new sending unit in my 40 Plymouth. When removing the old one I forgot to label the wires. I hooked the new one up and it reads all over the place and seems to act more like an amp gauge than a fuel gauge. The higher the rpm's the fuller the tank gets. Hey....Maybe I've discovered the answer to the high costs of fuel?????

;)

if I reverse the wires can I do any harm to the unit or the gauge?

believe you will see a 1 an a 2 on both the guage and the sender..they should hook accordingly...the tank must be grounded well..I mean real well as the wiper is on the inner housing that is connected to the outer plate by way of three rivets ..there is a gasket between this plate and housing and the sender and the tank...ie the need to ensure the ground is superb. be bery bery erratic otherwise if you read at all...

Reg..they should be color coded..if not able to detect the color...you will want to use your ohm meter and a jumper wire.disconnect both wires on the sender..only disconnect one wire on the guage......jumper this wire to ground under the dash..go to the trunk and read the wires..the one reading to ground back there is the same as the front grounded..hook this to number as indicated on the guage..the other well you know it has to go to the other terminal... the third wire on the guage is battery in..don't mess with this.

Thanks Tim. One last question. Will I do damage to the gauge or sender if I just reverse the wires as they are hooked up now? I really hate hearing myself cuss real loud in a confined space.
