hkestes41 Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 I just purchased a 230 from a 57 model and have some questions. 1) Looking at the front motor mount for the 57 I will need to change to the sadle mount for my 48. Will the sadle mount work with the 57 waterpump? 2) Will have to change the bellhousing to have the rear motor mounts, should the 48 bellhousing bolt to the back of the 57 block? 3) Will the input shaft on my 53 model OD transmission fit with the 57 crank? Last this thing gives me the dual groove pulleys and brackets for the A/C that I have had on the shelf for aobut 2 years. Quote

moose Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 Looks like the water pump will have to be changed, the radiator hoses are on the wrong sides. While you do that, put the motor mount plate from you old motor on there. You'll have to play around with the mounting and brackets, but if you've got the double pulley, it can be done. The bellhousing will most likely fit... how much would they have changed the block castings in a couple of years? I don't know. Input shaft? Probably... You can always have a pilot bushing made or file one down on a drill press, if it's different. Good luck! Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 (edited) Mine is supposed to be a 1957 engine. Looks to me just like any other older model at the front. Here's a shot of the water pump. Uses the old style "horseshoe" motor mount, etc. When I got it, it had the double groove pulley but was too tall for the space available as I recall......replaced it with single groove. The trans, flywheel, etc that I had on the previous engine just mounted to this engine OK far as I can recall. My previous engine had been a 50 Dodge motor with a Plymouth flywheel attached using four bolts. Prior to that, the engine was a factory rebuilt Plymouth item. Just kept re-using the same pieces like trans over time. This engine has been in for probably 12 years and things seem to work just fine. As I hired a mechanic fellow I know to actually do the work, I can't speak to the details of how some things were done. This engine was bought from a guy who was using it in a 1951 Plymouth, so he likely changed some things before I purchased the motor. My point is......the 57 model should ultimately work in your car, but some changes will be needed. In order to use the double pulley, you may need to move the radiator forward. There's only an inch or less clearance between the fan blade and radiator now, at least on mine. Edited August 27, 2010 by BobT-47P15 Quote
greg g Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 On my 56 engine install, I just seaped over the "right stuff" from the 46 to make it work. I used the 46 bellhousing withthe 56 (6 bolt) flywheel. You should ot have a problem with the input shaft but check the pilot bushig to assure they are the same dempth and diameter. Also used the 46 waterpump. Quote
james curl Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 I passed on a complete 59 Plymouth engine and overdrive transmission at PATE swap meet two years ago. You would need the 59 steering column and shift linkage to make it work and the transmission was quite a bit longer than my 3 speed transmission. I talked another Plymouth owner onto buying it even though he said he did not need it, he had a 34 coupe and a 54 sedan. The man who had it did not want to take it home and only wanted $100.00 for the engine and transmission. I have a 218 and a 230 engine in storage right now so I did not need to store another. Quote
JerseyHarold Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 I put a '57 engine in my '52, and it went right in. The motor was in a '39 Dodge before I bought it, so some parts may have been swapped out along the line before I got it. Quote
