Dan Babb Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 My horn doesn't work. Tried to wire it to the battery and no sound at all. Look at vintage power wagons and a new horn is $175...and it's not even gold plated. The cone is in good condition. Anyone find a replacement 'noisemaker' that will bolt up to the stock cone? I'll be converting to 12v. From reading other horn posts, it seems like 6 or 12v doesn't seem to matter with the horn, but throwing that out there just in case. I'd rather not spend close to $200 for a horn, but want to keep the original look. Quote
TodFitch Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 Did this just happen suddenly or has the horn not worked during your ownership? Also, horns draw a lot of current. So a small jumper wire probably would not be sufficient if your are just testing across the battery. It also means that you need a good ground. Anyway, they are pretty simple beasts. Open the cover, dress the points, if it is equipped with a capacitor inside then check that. Then adjust the current. May not work but if it does it is free. The information on my web site is for older horns but I suspect the principles would be the same: http://www.ply33.com/Repair/horn Quote
Reg Evans Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 Dan, I have a working stock truck horn with mounting bracket. PM me if interested. I'll be gone until 3:30 or so today. Reg Quote
Tom Skinner Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 Dan, If you have a Service Manual, you can refer to it for the adjustment, or repair. By researching your steps to this would give you confidence to try the repair. They are fairly simple and you would probably fix it. Tom Huntersville, NC Quote
50 Dodge Lug Nut Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 There's a set on Ebay for a '50 Plymouth car, if that will help you. Regards, Frank http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290463747753&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:MOTORS:1123 Quote
Dan Babb Posted August 14, 2010 Author Report Posted August 14, 2010 I never knew horns were servicable...I just thought they died and went to heaven. I'll open mine up and see if it's just gunked up inside. If I can't make it work Reg, I'll take you up on yours. Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 On the horns that I have had apart , the points were adjustable . Yours might be different . Quote
