ggdad1951 Posted August 10, 2010 Report Posted August 10, 2010 ok, getting around to all those old totes full of parts that I need to start to paint. I pulled out my Ziploc with my "front spring rear shackle"(s) in it. Took it to the plastic media blaster to clean it up and seems I am missing a "bolt"....my parts book doesn't even have THAT shackle! Quote

I'll check at home over lunch. Funny story, found out from my friend that took that off that there wasn't one on there when he took it off. The shackle was just sitting in the hole w/o the "bolt"! I wonder how long my father drove that like that! Quote

Couldn't have been too long...it would have destroyed all the threads if it had....you should check it close to make sure it is useable...nothing worse then getting 3/4 of a job done and one little thing messing up progress. As usual, things that shouldn't be an issue seem to pop their heads up on this stuff! Quote
48Dodger Posted August 10, 2010 Report Posted August 10, 2010 Driver side, front spring, rear shackle, upper mount (frame) is left hand thread. That frame mount gets mangled more often than the rest. If the bushing was damaged before (turned wrong way, etc.), he may not have been able to replace it easliy. Just guessin'. OR...he broke a shackle and tried to replace it with a passenger side shakle....then not being able to thread a right hand threaded bushing on...follow me? lol 48D Quote

This is the same man who said he was going to use roller chain to "fix/replace" his engine mount in his '90 Pontiac 2000. Edited August 10, 2010 by ggdad1951 Quote

ggdad1951 Posted October 14, 2010 Author Report Posted October 14, 2010 (edited) Ok put front springs on and gapped the shackles per the book but the ONE bottommed out on the bushing thus not allowing grease to flow past. So do I gap it one more thread to let gease past? This is the ONE bushing I had to replace. Also I assume the bushing get tightened down snug correct? Thanks guys! Is the passenger side upper mount(frame) left hand thread too? I ask this question for 48dodger ,because I bought two news front/rear shackle with left and right thread. Quote
ggdad1951 Posted October 22, 2010 Author Report Posted October 22, 2010 mine only had the one LH thread (driver side lower), the passenger side was all RH threaded Quote
Fernando Mendes Posted October 22, 2010 Report Posted October 22, 2010 Look that I found now in my TM10-1513 MAINTENANCE MANUAL FOR WILLYS TRUCK 1/4 ton 4x4 MODEL MB (JEEP)-May,15th 1942. Spring shackles:"There are six bushings used with RIGHT HAND threads and two with LEFT HAND threads. The RIGHT HAND threaded type bushings have PLAIN hexagon head. The LEFT HAND threaded bushings have a groove around the head. The two LEFT HAND threaded "U" shackles can be identified by a forged boss on the lower shank of the shackle identifying the LEFT HAND thread. These two LEFT HAND threaded "U" shackles are used at the LEFT FRONT spring and the RIGHT REAR spring, with the LEFT HAND threaded end at the spring eyes. Fernando Mendes Posted October 23, 2010 Report Posted October 23, 2010 Why can not be the same manner as Jeep? Both are two axle.Which Dodge manual says that only LH threaded in driver side upper rear shackle? How it is in Dodge rear shackles? Quote
Fernando Mendes Posted October 23, 2010 Report Posted October 23, 2010 I found this other figure showing the LEFT REAR spring shackle with LH thread in spring eye. This two points in red identify the Left hand thread(groove around the head bushing and forget boss on the lower shank of the shackle).I would like to know if there are another three spring shackles have LH thread. In the next days I will be mounting my springs restored. Fernando Mendes Posted October 29, 2010 Report Posted October 29, 2010 Ah different vehicles ""That's exactly what I said, just said a different way. The reason I said 'lower' was to indicate the left hand threaded bush went in the spring eye, rather than the chassis bush. You can actually use right hand thread shackles all over, but whether you use the correct ones or not, the critical principle is that when everything is in place and the truck sitting normally, any bounce on the spring shouldn't cause the C shackle to rotate to the point where it bottoms out in the bush thread.... Hmmm, just read that and it is as clear as mud. Basically assemble the truck and check you have half a turn of free play before the shackle hits the end of the bush.""Gordon from g503.com Jeep forum.
