P-12 Tommy Posted June 26, 2010 Report Posted June 26, 2010 I spent this past week restoring my P-12 steering wheel. I used PC-7 epoxy and sanded it down pretty good. When it was all said and done, it was 100% better than before. Here's some before and after pics. BTW... anybody want the steering wheel I used while I restored mine? It's the one I bought off E-bay. It's from a '47 Plymouth. Tom Quote

Robin (UK) Posted June 27, 2010 Report Posted June 27, 2010 Tom, I know a guy in the UK who is looking for a P15 wheel. Please could you give me (him) first option on it? I will contact him and get back to you as soon as I can. Thank you. Robin. PS Please PM me with the price. Thanks. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted June 27, 2010 Author Report Posted June 27, 2010 Robin, The wheel has a small crack at both ends of the horizontal bar. Other than that it's not bad for a 63 year old steering wheel. I've never shipped anything overseas so I'll check to see how much it is. I'll PM you on Monday when I check the post office here. louie the fly Posted June 27, 2010 Report Posted June 27, 2010 Hey Tom, that wheel came up fantastic. Can you give us a rundown on the process you used. For example, did you have to widen the cracks or anything? What did you paint it with? This is yet another job on my list. Thanks Louie Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted June 27, 2010 Author Report Posted June 27, 2010 Louie, I read articles on how to do it. Someone here mentioned it, but I can't remember who. I took a hacksaw blade and made the cracks wider so they would accept the epoxy better. I waited a few days to let it harden good. Then I hand sanded. I came across a few cracks I missed so I mixed up a little more and did those other cracks. I hand sanded again with 180 grit, then 100, then 60. It came out pretty good. I used two coats of Krylon Fusion, then I did a couple coats of clear. Like I said it looks 100% better than it did before. Tom Quote

BobT-47P15 Posted June 29, 2010 Report Posted June 29, 2010 Nice work there, Tom. Looks real good. I presume white was the original wheel color on those cars (I'm no expert on those models). Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted June 29, 2010 Author Report Posted June 29, 2010 Thanks Bob. Actually I wanted a maroon color but I checked everywhere around here and all anybody had in Krylon Fusion was white. It was white when I got it so........ Tom Quote
48Dodger Posted June 29, 2010 Report Posted June 29, 2010 ... I hand sanded again with 180 grit, then 100, then 60... Did you mean 60, 100, then 180?... The wheel looks great! 48D Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted June 29, 2010 Author Report Posted June 29, 2010 Dohhhhh, I had it backwards. Thanks, Tom Quote
dndrodshop Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 If you have an aftermarket column, the LeCarra Mark 10 is a good look. Quote
martybose Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 If you have an aftermarket column, the LeCarra Mark 10 is a good look. That's neat! How much work was it to make the original horn ring mount and work? Marty Quote
dndrodshop Posted July 2, 2010 Report Posted July 2, 2010 My son makes the adapter but I use the original starter button for the horn. Quote
