brian hood Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 Good evening, everyone! I hope you and your families are enjoying your lovely summers. My wife and I have been very blessed. We have two new wonderful additions to our life: Mr. William Hood and Miss Alana Hood. May God bless you and keep you as He has kept us these last few months. On a different note, I have a problem with my daily driver. It's an 85 D100 with a slant-6 and an automatic transmission. The other day, as I was driving it, I noticed that it began to miss slightly. As I would get around 55 to 60, it would pop through the carburator and misfire. When I got home, I checked the wires and found that the top tower of the coil had some clear liquid in it, possibly oil. I decided to do a complete tune-up and replace the coil. I gave it new plug wires, plugs, distributor cap, and rotor button. As you look at the pictures of the spark plug, you can see that there's an ashy build-up (not oily) from the #5 cylinder. I did a compression test and all of the cylinders were 120 lbs each. Since this is an electronic ignition in the truck, is there is any suggestions from anyone what I should be checking for to figure out what I'm missing. Thanks, Brian Hood Quote
1940plymouth Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 Brian, I can't help you with your question, but I surely can say congrats to you and your wife on the great additions to your family. Bob Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 check the air gap between the pickup and the reluctor in the distributor..check to be sure you do not have any excessive side paly of the distributor shaft.. Quote
JerseyHarold Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 Congratulations on your two new bundles of joy. Parenthood definitely is an excititing adventure. Have you checked the engine with a vacuum guage? It would help disclose mechanical issues. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 I would suggest you sit down and hold those little angels and not worry about your truck. However, if you insist, Missing and backfiring thru the carb can mean its running lean. Change your fuel filter and see what happens. Start with the cheap stuff first. At any rate, big congratulations, you are so lucky. Quote
dezeldoc Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 Nice looking little ones! enjoy them they grow up to fast. not to make you worry but most of the slant 6 i have seen with problems with #5 end up breaking a rod in that cyl, if neglected. the oiling to the last 2 cyls is kinda sketchy after some miles. check and make sure you don't have any valves pounding themselfs into the head(another common problem). pull the valve cover and check the height on them, if they are eating a valve seat they will stick up higher than the rest. if they look good re adjust them. P-12 Tommy Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 Congrats on the new little ones! They'll grow up before you know it. As far as your problem goes, have your computer checked. I had a '78 Fury years ago that did that and it ended being the computer. Of course that was the crappy lean burn(electronic spark control) It wouldn't hurt to check. My 2 cents. Tom Quote
