B2B front brake shoes adjustment

Recommended Posts

Hi, on B2B front brake shoes adjustment i seen there is a special tool to adjust these.

Can I adjust these shoes without this tool?

For instance if I adjust them at the bottum first, say, turn the shoes to the outmost position, try the wheel drum on it and if free turning, then fasten the bolts? Or is to simplistic thinking?

I feel it really does't make a differents because the shoes are adjusted from the top adjusters until they hit the brake drum anyway.. What purpose have the bottom oblong settings ??

No. If you get the bottom heel adjustment just right and then try and adjust the toe the heel will be doing the work only. You really need the official tool or a home made one to get it right.

If you go to the top of the page and click on "Return to P15-D24.com" you can then go to the tech tips section that has a procedure for adjusting the brakes without the special tools. It's a pretty good write up and works pretty good. Basically you're adjusting the anchor pins until the shoes just touch, then adjust the other adjustment, going back and forth until you get both ends of the shoe adjusted out together. It's not as good as having the proper tool, but it does work.

Here's a quick link to it. http://www40.addr.com/~merc583/mopar/framesets/techtipframeset.html

I can't figure out if:

1. The arrows are pointing the wrong way

2. If I'm looking at the front or back of the backing plate

3. Or it's just me. (I seem to get it right, study the sheet as "the procedure" but at some point of confusion just go with what feels correct. Am I the only one?

Thanks,

Hank

What helped me figure out the arrows and what direction to turn the adjustors was to watch how the shoes moved when I had the drum off and I could see what happened when I moved the adjusters. I too was confused by the discriptions. Once I watched direction caused the shows to move in and out it all made sense to me.

I propose the diagram it not correct (although helpful, and well drafted, it may need revision)

Would like to know what others think,

Hank
