50 Deluxe Posted June 5, 2010 Report Posted June 5, 2010 My 50 Plymouth P20 (Stock) quit on me two weeks ago. I replaced the carburetor, points, condenser, wires and plugs. I put some gas down the top of the carburetor; it started and with a few small adjustments it runs great; however it will not start unless I put a very small amount of gas down the carb. It doesn't matter if it is cold or hot. Did I teach it a bad habit or what. I took the fuel line off and turned the key, it pumped a lot of fuel which leads me to believe the fuel pump is ok. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 5, 2010 Report Posted June 5, 2010 the fuel pump fill the carb fuel bowl but the ACCELETAOR pump built into the carb, more commonly referred to by folks as the shooter, is the item that will enrich your mixture when you pump the pedal..HOWEVER this is only as effective as you ability to retain fuel in the carb reservoir itself...you have to deterine if you have this fuel available and then ascertain if the shooter is actually operational...sometimes if these cars sit for a long time dry the leather will shrink and the fuel will by pass to the side of the plunger seal instead of being force through the passages into the carb throat..
