claybill Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 1941 ply hood latch. i took off the upper hood latch/spring and put on one that looked better and had a nicer latch...((&^%^$#$$#%) cool! looks good. i closed it ,and was ready to adjust it and now it wont open. no matter how hard i pull or pry or squeeze..even a big HAMMER wont help.! it has a spring loaded latch that goes into a hole that is released when you pull the knob under the dash. it has a secondary safety latch..(accessible and not the problem) the underdash cable pulls to release the latch and then it pops up via a spring. the cable is also spring loaded. i can get under the hood with a tool to depress the cable ALLLL the way ( i think) so it should release, it doesn't ,...and then i pry!!! and now i just cry!! bill Quote
JerseyHarold Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Try having someone pull the inside handle while you slap the hood with your hand. This has worked for me in the past. Quote
pflaming Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 plasma is cleaner than acetelene! Being locked out must be the pits. Quote
Flatie46 Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Put the big hammer away, get your blood presssure down I know how things like this can cost you if you show it whos boss. You might have to have someone pull the release while you help it with a screwdriver or pull the cable a little more with some vise grips. Quote
claybill Posted May 31, 2010 Author Report Posted May 31, 2010 that was my feelings exactly...it wasnt quite releasing enough..PULL HARDER BILLY!! i did and now the set screw has slipped off and the cable is free. i am still working on it...alas my friends..there is no solution other than the torch, re -weld and re-PAINT THE ENTIRE HOOD!!! i would have to cut a 6x6 hole right under the hood ornament to loosen the 4 nuts holding the upper plate on. it would open..i could go from there. so; i cant change oil cant add water cant install heater the funny thing is...i have remained extremely calm thru this, actually laughing a little. 1949P17BC Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Been There done it, I used a long screw driver and around the latch area, you should be able to push on it, click and your open Quote
JerseyHarold Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Take a good look at the latch you removed and see the best angle of attack. Instead of a screwdriver, you might want to use a long-bladed putty knife to poke around between the hood and nose area. They are thin and strong. Quote
Flatie46 Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Been There done it, I used a long screw driver and around the latch area, you should be able to push on it, click and your open This will work because on my car as long as I've owned it it's not had the cable and I have to use a screwdriver to pop it open. 1942cowdodge Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Nuke it!!!!No just take a breath and usually something will happen in your mind that will show the proper way to get that hood latch unglued. Quote
old rat 49 Posted June 1, 2010 Report Posted June 1, 2010 Had similar spring problem with another car. Have assistant pull cable while you PUSH DOWN and then try lifting. Might just work. Quote

I just went out and tried it and it worked.Tom Quote
