Dale Uhrich Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 Does anyone know what will be encountered to swap a 1949 1 ton 230 motor into a 1948 1/2 ton that has a 218. both trucks have 4 speeds. will which 4 speed is in each truck matter ( I believe there is 2 4 speed options.) How do you tell if the 4 speeds are the same? Quote
Merle Coggins Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 I didn't know there were 2 different 4 speed trannies, so I can't help you there. But as far as I know, the 218 and 230 share the same block so it sould be an easy swap. The flywheel mounting may be different, as the 218's genreally have 4 studs, whereas the 230 crank flange has 8 holes. But Since you have the complete setup for the 230 it shouldn't be a problem for you. Good luck Merle Quote
Young Ed Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 I think a little later in the 50s the syncro 4 speeds came out. As far as I know you should be good to swap and go. The 4spd should have a casting # on the side to compare also. Quote
grey beard Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 Dale, It may he wise to check the clutch plates and input shafts before you go together, as well as checking disc diameter. It is my understanding that there are several different size applications here. Others are correct in saying the 218 and 230 are the dientical casting. If you get into the larger block - whcih comes in three or four different displacements, you will need to fabricate a small change in your front mount flanges and radiator position due to the loner length, gut otherwise the fit willbe good, also. I'd also check pilot bearing diameter with the input shaft if you do any engine/crank swapping. The four speed adds only a grandma gear. High gear is still 1 : 1 ratio, so going down the highway there is no advantage whatsoever. Now if you could find an overdrive unit . . . . . . but I'm just dreamin' LOL Quote
