Woody Branham Posted February 22, 2007 Report Posted February 22, 2007 How do you remove the ignition switch on a p11 ? I can see no screw to allow it to slip out. No keys came with the car. Thanks, Woody Quote
Don St Peter Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 On my Ply P-9 there is a hex head screw that is accessible through the hole at the 6:00 position of the dash board. The screw once removed allows the switch to be removed from the back side. Good Luck Don Quote
Jim Yergin Posted February 23, 2007 Report Posted February 23, 2007 I have the same screw and hole for the ignition switch in my P12. Jim Yergin Quote
Woody Branham Posted February 23, 2007 Author Report Posted February 23, 2007 Thanks, I found the hole. It was covered by a snap on cover. I popped the cover off and tried to peek inside. The light I used was dim bit it looked like a slotted screw holding it in. Tryed to get it out but the light was too big and in the way of the screwdriver. Went there on my lunch break so not enough time to finish. Will try tomorrow while have the weekend off. Woody Quote
Jim Yergin Posted February 24, 2007 Report Posted February 24, 2007 Woody, Mine had a slotted screw too and it came out easily enough by just sticking the screw driver uo through the access hole without even seeing it. Jim Yergin Quote
Woody Branham Posted February 24, 2007 Author Report Posted February 24, 2007 It was a slotted screw and came out fairly easy. Two problems though. The cylinder will not come out of the casing. I know they are spring loaded but that little pin will not depress to let it pop out. Second, all the wires are rotten so I marked them with color tape and cut them, then disconnected the col to remove the whole thing. I will need to replace all those wires before attemping to start it. Also pulled the plug wire harness to install new wires. My repair manual arrived today but the wiring diagram is not that great. Anyone have a good one thy can post or email to me? Thanks, Woody Quote
JerseyHarold Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 Don't get destructive to get the cylinder out! Take the ignition lock to a locksmiths. They can pick the existing cylinder, turn it so the pin can be depressed, then make a key to fit the lock by 'impressioning'. Then, you have the correct key that will fit both the doors and ignition. Shouldn't be too expensive, especially if you bring them the lock. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 IF you can find a locksmith these days that knows how to do things. It seems not many around here can deal with the old car locks. Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 IF you can find a locksmith these days that knows how to do things. It seems not many around here can deal with the old car locks. Our own Mikemaker can do so. Check his profile. Quote
Woody Branham Posted February 25, 2007 Author Report Posted February 25, 2007 Thanks, sent mike an email. Still need a good wiring diagram. Quote
mikemaker Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 Check your email Woody. DO NOT drill the pin. Send me the lock and I'll fit it for you. JerseyHarold is exactly correct. You got to pick the lock to pop out the cyl. Fitting a key to that cyl. is no big deal either. It's easy to do, email me and I'll take care of it for ya. Quote
Jims50chrysler Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 Hi: I found this thread very usefull as I have an ignition switch that would occasionally start the car but for the most part the key would not even turn the switch. I have rescued the lock from the locksmith that I took it to after he was talking about drilling out the pin and following the directions here was able to get the cylinder out myself. The question is....is it the cylinder that is causing my grief or is the problem inside the housing? Thanks in advance Jim Quote
JerseyHarold Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 Many times a worn key is the problem. Try turning the key with the cylinder removed from the housing. If it turns easily, it's the housing. If not,it's the cylinder or key. Quote
greg g Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 Likely the key is worn after 60 years of use and not making the tumblers travel far enough to release completely. Quote
Jims50chrysler Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 got in narrowed down to the cylinder or the Key.....where is the best place to get a replacement cylinder with a key? Jim Quote
JerseyHarold Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 Go to a good parts store. My Standard/Blue Streak Ignition Catalog from 1989 shows it's the same cylinder 1949-68. Their part number was US-12L. The keys will have the newer design heads. Quote
Jims50chrysler Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 thank you. I checked the blue streak web page here is the link http://www.smpcorp.com/web_app/catalog/smp_bgbulk.aspx If someone needs it. Jim Quote
