Young Ed Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 The 48 started on the third set of pump pump pump crank crank crank. Drove the first 100 of the 120 miles home without issue. Cruising along at 60 and the speedo jumped down to almost 0 and then sprung back to 60. Odometer never turned again. What happened? Quote

These cars are never done and always need TLC but isn't that why we love them. Seriously, hope it is a simple fix although removing the speedo unit is always a fun job. Quote
Young Ed Posted April 2, 2010 Author Report Posted April 2, 2010 No trip odometer on the lowly plymouth. I have one busted up speedo and I think maybe one intact one to try and get a repair part from. Quote
daddyo23 Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 Glad you got it out and home. Look forward to seeing you with it on the road. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 For what it is worth, the odometer on my '41 was not working. I had a spare speedometer from another '41 that I planned on swapping in. When I removed the broken one and compared the two, I discovered that the internal mechanisms were different even thought the outside faces were the same. Different suppliers? I ended up having to replace the odometer number cylinders and it works fine. My point is that you may find that the parts do not swap from one unit to another. Jim Yergin Quote
Young Ed Posted April 2, 2010 Author Report Posted April 2, 2010 Jim I have noticed the same thing in the p15 ones and in my 39-47 dodge truck ones. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 I haven't had those problems -yet - but of course my speedo reads about 15 mph off and the odometer isn't really accurate, but it's turning. It seems to operate ok in warmer weather, but when I drove it a couple times this winter, the needle jumped way up to the high side and was crazy. So, I just unhooked it til things warmed up. When I drove it in cooler (but not real cold) temps about a month ago, it was behaving fairly normally again. I have two or three other speedos, including one that appears to possibly have been worked on once years ago.....will try them out when it's warmer and I get in the mood to stand on my head (under the dash, that is). I tried taking out the bottom cushion of the seat, but then you still have the frame to contend with. So I'd just as soon leave the cushion and work on the slant. Quote
