Joe Flanagan Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 Anyone ever use a helicoil kit? I just used one for the first time to repair a stripped-out hole where my automatic choke bolts on to my exhaust manifold. Very neat. Worked nicely. For sale at most auto parts stores. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 best thing to have about the shop...have save me a few times when working with this old stuff..especially cast trim with threaded holes.. Quote
randroid Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 Folks, I've used helicoils to repair stripped-out spark plug holes in VW heads, and never had to look back. -Randy Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 Hey Joe, when I got Roy to sand blast the intake for the stret rod I had him remove a stud that was in the thermostat housing . He use such heat on it to remove the stud, he melted the hole where the stud was and when we tried to put a bolt in there it would not tighten. He drilled it out and put a hli coil in there. He must have done a good job because when we put everything back together it did not leak. I used it on the 41 Stude as well when the exhaust bolt hole was stripped. I was able to insert one without drilling. I got very lucky on that one. It is still working. Sometimes it better to be lucky than skilled. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 5, 2010 Author Report Posted February 5, 2010 I believe my machinist used one on my block in one of the holes for the head bolts. There's also one in my generator bracket. There were a lot of stripped out threads on this project. Quote
1955 plymouth Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 I like the Timesert. These inserts are excellent, easy to use kits and the repair is solid threads. Check out the link;) http://www.timesert.com/index.html Quote
Gary Manes Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Wow! I am so glad to see all the positive comments on the helicoil. If I keep my Desoto engine, I am going to need one on one of the holes in the block (bottom) for the machine screws that hold on the water pump. It actually goes inside the water jacket. I have been so worried if it could be fixed by me or the machine shop using a helicoil. I still plan to add a different (automatic) tranny behind whatever goes in the engine bay. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 5, 2010 Author Report Posted February 5, 2010 No worries, Gary. The helicoil ought to work fine. Quote
captden29 Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 i usedone first time on the lower unit of my outboard. easy to use and it works great, no leaks. i need to do the spark plug hole on my riding lawn mower and i hope it will work as well as on the boat. dennis Quote
Flatie46 Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 I use em alot at work they hold up well. I think they really help out on aluminum. If it's something your screwing a steel bolt in and out and it wears out the aluminum threads. Quote
